Immunization training available for pharmacy technicians

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is excited to partner with Haywood Community College to offer The Pharmacy Technicians and Vaccinations: An Advanced Training Program in April. Numerous pharmacy technicians have completed this program and now aide in the vaccination effort across North Carolina. Under the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (US DHHS) PREP Act, qualified pharmacy technicians may administer COVID-19 and other eligible vaccinations to persons 3 and older under pharmacist supervision.  In August 2021, NC state law granted qualified technicians limited vaccination authority under pharmacist supervision once PREP Act legislation is rescinded. School partners with Area L AHEC, the Governor’s Institute, to develop free online resources for teens struggling with stimulant abuse, their educators

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, along with Alexor LLC, Area L AHEC (part of the NC AHEC program) and the Governor’s Institute are concerned with the increase in stimulant misuse in teens across the country. “In 2019, 83% of unintentional medication and drug overdose deaths in the United States involved multiple substances, including stimulants,” said Debby Futrell, Pharm.D., President/CEO of Area L AHEC. UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Asheville Campus provides public health emergency, disaster planning support to Buncombe County  Faculty and students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy partnered with the Buncombe County Department of Health and Human Services to develop and test community plans to distribute drugs or vaccines during emergencies. When COVID-19 hit, this partnership was leveraged to engage pharmacy students and faculty as volunteer workers at testing and vaccination clinics operated in Buncombe County. UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy maintains No. 1 residency match rate in US among schools with 50+ matching

Story updated May 4, 2022 Pharm.D. students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy maintained the No. 1 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) PGY1 residency match rate among schools of pharmacy in the U.S. with 50 or more students matching with a residency program. Two faculty members receive honor of AACP New Investigator Award

UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Kathryn Morbitzer, Pharm.D., M.S., and Michael Wolcott, Pharm.D., Ph.D., are recipients of the 2022 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) New Investigator Award. The two join 14 others from around the United States in receiving this year’s honor. Students create five-part ambulatory care workshop series to inspire future leaders in health care

UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Pharm.D. students Cami Andreini and Julia Fabricio have a passion for connecting with patients and serving as patient advocates. Andreini, a third-year pharmacy student, and Fabricio, a second-year pharmacy student, each pursued separate ambulatory-care based internships to support their desire to improve patients’ health on a more personal level. Fabricio worked in family medicine at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, while Andreini participated in a Johns Hopkins summer internship focused in HIV. UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy celebrates 125 years of service

This month, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is celebrating its 125th Anniversary! In 1897, the school of pharmacy was established under Dean Edward Vernon Howell with the vision of serving the health care needs of North Carolinians. The first pharmacy class boasted 17 students and one instructor, and tuition cost $75 a year. Fun fact!
