The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is excited to partner with Haywood Community College to offer The Pharmacy Technicians and Vaccinations: An Advanced Training Program in April.

Numerous pharmacy technicians have completed this program and now aide in the vaccination effort across North Carolina. Under the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (US DHHS) PREP Act, qualified pharmacy technicians may administer COVID-19 and other eligible vaccinations to persons 3 and older under pharmacist supervision.  In August 2021, NC state law granted qualified technicians limited vaccination authority under pharmacist supervision once PREP Act legislation is rescinded.

The Pharmacy Technicians and Vaccinations: An Advanced Training Program, is an Accreditation Council For Pharmacy Education accredited program that is designed to provide the necessary information and requirements as outlined by the PREP Act to meet HHS guidelines for initial qualifications of pharmacy technicians to administer vaccines.

This interactive program teaches participants the skills necessary to become a source for vaccine information and administration. The program discusses the expanding role of pharmacy technicians, legal and regulatory requirements for vaccine administration, safety and quality procedures, steps to take in the event of a vaccine emergency and will demonstrate the appropriate immunization administration technique to participants.

The program has also been approved by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) as meeting requirements for the Immunization Administration Assessment-based Certificate. More information on this certificate can be found on the PTCB website.

There are three components to the certificate training program:

  • 1.5 hour self-study program
  • 3.0 hour live seminar
  • Hands-on assessment of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection technique
