This month, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is celebrating its 125th Anniversary!

In 1897, the school of pharmacy was established under Dean Edward Vernon Howell with the vision of serving the health care needs of North Carolinians. The first pharmacy class boasted 17 students and one instructor, and tuition cost $75 a year. Fun fact! Back then, our Dean was also a Ph.D. student and an outstanding member of the Carolina football team.

Today, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy continues to be the only public school of pharmacy in the state of North Carolina and one of the oldest in the nation.

As the No. 1 school of pharmacy in the country, the school is home to 600+ professional Pharm.D. students, 110+ graduate students, and nearly 100 postdoctoral fellows. More than one-half of the School’s 8,000+ Pharm.D. alumni live in North Carolina (covering all 100 counties), continuing the founding mission of addressing health care needs of North Carolinians.

Today, the School is guided by its newly launched strategic plan, BEYOND, as it works to redefine excellence in education, pharmacy practice and research. It remains on a mission to prepare leaders and innovators to solve the world’s most pressing health care challenges.

“Through the decades, our commitment to improving health care at home and beyond has remained steadfast. Today, we stand on our values of WE CARE (Welcoming, Equity, Commitment, Accountability, Respect and Excellence), working to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that reflects the great state of North Carolina,” said Angela Kashuba, dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. “There’s so much to be proud of as we look back on 125 years of service to our state and I am excited to celebrate this milestone with members of our pharmacy community!”

Join the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy for a 125th Anniversary birthday bash on March 25.
