UNC alumni Gary and Fran Whaley honor family, give back to support future pharmacists
January 14, 2022Fifteen years ago, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy alumni Lloyd Milton Whaley established a scholarship to support future pharmacists. The Army World War II veteran and Eastern North Carolina native was able to pursue his higher education goals at UNC because of the support he received from the G.I. Bill. Following his pharmacy education, Milton went on to open his own community pharmacy where his wife Neta B. Whaley served as the pharmacy bookkeeper. Pharm.D./MPH dual-degree program shaped, prepared four alumni

The Pharm.D./MPH dual-degree program offered by the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in collaboration with the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health allows pharmacy students take advantage of those opportunities. The dual-degree Pharm.D./MPH program prepares students to become health promoters and educators in their roles as pharmacists. As problems become more complex, researchers with divergent expertise need to collaborate to form new knowledge, generate new ideas, pursue groundbreaking research, and solve difficult problems. Eshelman School of Pharmacy, UNC Department of Chemistry partner to launch UNC Chemistry-Biology Interface Training Program
January 5, 2022The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is joining forces with the UNC Department of Chemistry to establish an NIH-funded UNC Chemistry-Biology Interface Training Program that will support graduate students preparing for careers in modern biomedical science. The T32 CBI Training Program will provide financial support and training opportunities to help outstanding graduate students become independent, skilled, and creative scientists with broad expertise that spans chemistry and biology. School partners with App State to offer students pathway for assured admission
December 22, 2021Enrolled and incoming Appalachian State University students who express interest in pursuing a doctoral degree in pharmacy may now be eligible for assured admission to the Pharm.D. program at the University of North Carolina’s Eshelman School of Pharmacy. An Early Assurance Program (EAP) partnership between the two institutions was signed in July and aligns with both universities’ commitments to train the future public health workforce. The EAP program offers qualifying App State students an interview with the School of Pharmacy’s admissions committee. Treish completed his Doctor of Pharmacy degree with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 1999, and a residency in Hematology/Oncology at UNC Hospitals in 2000. While some progress has been made to address medication mismanagement through patient care pharmacy services, gaps exist in the current care delivery system to realize the potential of optimizing medications to improve public and population health. December 14, 2021The PCORI Addressing Health Equity award described below was developed with funding from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute $2K Stakeholder Voucher award program. The Informatics and Data Science (IDSci) Program within the NC TraCS Institute provided access to data from the Carolina Data Warehouse to support preliminary research. Ava Vargason’s ‘sticky’ bacteria research wins Three Minute Thesis top prize
December 10, 2021Understanding and researching emerging issues takes years of dedication from graduate students at UNC-Chapel Hill. The Graduate School’s annual Three Minute Thesis competition finals, an initiative of Professional Development, helps graduate students distill their research topics in only three minutes for a non-academic audience in order to present their groundbreaking research in an easy-to-understand way. During the 2021 competition, graduate students submitted entries from many areas of campus, including in science and in the humanities, which were evaluated by a panel of judges to determine the top 10 presentations who advanced to the final competition.
