AACP Distinguished Preceptor Recognition Program selects Pete Koval

Associate Professor Pete Koval, Pharm.D., BCPS, CPP, has been chosen for the 2023 AACP Distinguished Preceptor Recognition Program, which recognizes individuals for their sustained commitment to excellence in experiential education and professional practice.   He is Director of Pharmacy Education with the Piedmont Area Health Education Center in Greensboro and a Clinical Pharmacist with Cone Health Family Medicine.   Koval has precepted more than 700 months of pharmacy students/residents and has mentored 50 ambulatory care-focused pharmacy residents. Faculty receives AACP Emerging Teaching Scholar Award

Assistant Professor Jackie Zeeman, Pharm.D., has received the 2023 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Emerging Teaching Scholar Award. This award recognizes excellence in academic pharmacy faculty engaged in the scholarship of teaching and learning.   Her research focuses on the assessment of student learning in informal learning environments, including interprofessional education and co-curricular activities, and strategies to use assessment data to inform curricular initiatives.  “My expertise resides in the scholarship of education, with a focus on assessing experiences that impact student learning and utilizing findings to guide data-driven decision making in curriculum and program development,” Zeeman said.  She shares … Read more


Serving our State through the Tar Heel Bus Tour

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy received two Tar Heel Bus Tour grants that support research projects addressing some of the health care needs of North Carolinians.  The purpose of the grants is to foster collaborative research stemming from ideas or conversations that occurred as a result of the 2019 and 2022 Tar Heel Bus Tours.   One grant will help educate underserved youth in rural communities about various health issues, and the other will help develop training for pharmacists to help reduce opioid overdose deaths.   After a 10-year break, Chancellor Kevin M. Building local and global pharmacy leaders

Caroline Welles Sasser ‘17, Pharm.D., had an interest in global pharmacy from the beginning. Fall 2023 welcomes a new training certificate program

Starting this fall, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy will offer a Health-System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Training Program (HSPAL) geared toward those currently working in the pharmacy field.  This new training program is for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to gain important knowledge and skills in health-system pharmacy administration to enhance their current role. Brain slice technology opens the door for personalized cancer treatment

Commencement celebrates the Class of 2023

One hundred ninety-three students came together Saturday, May 13 to mark their accomplishments during the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy commencement ceremony at Memorial Hall.   The School’s Class of 2023 included 22 Master of Science (M.S.) candidates, 155 Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) candidates and 16 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) candidates.  They were among nearly 6,500 Tar Heels, including undergraduate, graduate and professional students, to have their Carolina degrees conferred over the weekend.  Angela Kashuba, Dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, opened the ceremony by celebrating the Class of 2023. “This is your time to celebrate your accomplishments, your … Read more

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy hosted the First Annual Golden Mortar Awards to celebrate student achievement, faculty and preceptor excellence and outstanding alumni.   The Hollywood-style awards ceremony was held at the Varsity Theatre in downtown Chapel Hill and was emceed by Libby Powell, fourth year student body president, and Adam Persky, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Professional Education.  In addition to celebrating the graduating class of 2023, the class of 1973 was honored, marking their 50th reunion. Structural Genomics Consortium receives $1.5 million grant to help find possible new treatment options for patients with ALS

The U.S. Department of Defense awarded Alison Axtman, Ph.D. in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC-UNC) a two-year grant totaling $1.5 million. The grant will go toward research that could one day lead to new medications and new treatment options for patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.   ALS is a neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy announces new undergraduate minor

Carolina undergraduates now have the opportunity to study pharmaceutical sciences. The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy will soon be offering a new minor in pharmaceutical sciences and it will be available to all undergraduate students.
