Carolina undergraduates now have the opportunity to study pharmaceutical sciences. The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy will soon be offering a new minor in pharmaceutical sciences and it will be available to all undergraduate students. Applications open this fall, and the first classes will be held in spring 2024.

“The School’s faculty is thrilled with the addition of the minor to our programs at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. It is an excellent example of the School’s and the University’s shared commitment to academic excellence and preparing our students for their future roles as leaders, creative problem-solvers, lifelong learners and engaged citizens,” said Scott Singleton, program director of the pharmaceutical sciences minor and associate professor in the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry.

Pharmaceuticals are a major part of human health and the health care industry. The minor is designed to acquaint undergraduate students with core areas of pharmaceutical science in preparation for advanced study in the health sciences, an advanced degree in the health care professions, or a career in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries.

Interested students must fulfill specific prerequisite requirements and submit an application to be accepted into the program. Applications will be available each year in the first six weeks of the fall semester, and the program is capped at 28 students per academic year.

Students will learn the foundations of drug discovery, including pharmaceutical discovery, optimization, delivery and application. This program is ideally suited for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) major students. It offers shared learning experiences with graduate students and opportunities for undergraduate research.

The minor takes advantage of existing faculty expertise and courses at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. It will help students build fundamental technical language and knowledge in the pharmaceutical sciences, as well as help raise awareness about potential applications and career paths among undergraduates from different majors.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to expose undergraduate students to careers in pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences. The opportunities within these fields are endless and often unknown to students,” said Mary McClurg, Pharm.D., Executive Vice Dean-Chief Academic Officer.
