UNC Pharmacy professor leads glaucoma research team

A large interdisciplinary team conducted a large randomized controlled trial to increase African American question asking during glaucoma visits and improve patient outcomes. The team was led by Betsy Sleath. Ph.D., George H Cocolas Distinguished Professor in the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy (DPOP).   In 2017, the team received a grant worth nearly $1.6 million from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to help reduce vision problems in African Americans caused by glaucoma.   Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in African American patients. Professor Ronny Bell named the new Chair of the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy

Professor Ronny A. Bell, Ph.D., MS has been named the new Chair of the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy (DPOP) at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, effective January 1, 2023 Dr. Bell is currently a Professor with tenure in the Department of Social Sciences and Health Policy in the Division of Public Health Sciences at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Asheville campus students and faculty provide vaccinations to people experiencing homelessness

On Friday, October 28, several students and faculty on our Asheville campus participated in a community outreach event in partnership with Buncombe County Health and Human Services. As part of their efforts, seventy vaccinations were given to the clients of the AHOPE Day Center. Vaccinations were given for Hepatitis A, Flu, Covid-19, and Monkey Pox.  With 547 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in Buncombe County, AHOPE is often the only place that people who live outside can go for services, which makes it a powerful outreach and engagement tool in the community. UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy collaboration with UNC Project Malawi supported by a NIH grant.

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is one of five schools included in a research grant from the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the project “Adapting a point of use test card, the chemoPAD, for protecting chemotherapy drug quality in sub-Saharan Africa.” This project is led by Professor Marya Lieberman Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame who developed the chemoPAD technology.  This project’s goal is to validate a new technology for detecting inferior quality chemotherapy products at the point of use in four countries; Ethiopia, Malawi, Kenya, and Cameroon. Residency Program Takes Growth to Next Level

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is excited to announce significant growth in its Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Community-based Pharmacy Residency Program with the addition of six sites and five residents to the program. The new sites are located throughout North Carolina and include 501 Pharmacy in Chapel Hill; Angier Family Pharmacy in Angier, NC and Coats Pharmacy in Coats, NC; Brisson Drugs in St. Pauls, NC; Harris Teeter in Charlotte, NC; and Harris Teeter in Raleigh, NC. UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy professors conduct research into online chemotherapy medication access

Professors Sachiko Ozawa, Ph.D., M.H.S and Benyam Muluneh,  PharmD., BCOP, CPP at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy have published research into the online availability of chemotherapy medication. Their research details the risks patients may face when purchasing their medication online and strategies they can use to keep themselves safe. UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Daniel Gonzalez, Pharm.D., Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2023 Leon I. Goldberg Early Investigator Award. Established in 1986, the annual award honors young scientists for accomplishments in the field of clinical pharmacology early in their career. Two posters presented by UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy professors, Suzie Harris and Jackie Zeeman were recognized as Top 5 selections for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s Best Poster Award for the Social and Administration Section.
