$100 Million: Eshelman Gift to Fund Innovation Is Largest Ever to a Pharmacy School

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill today announced a $100 million commitment to the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy from Fred Eshelman, a 1972 graduate of the School, founder and former CEO of Pharmaceutical Product Development, and founding chairman of Furiex Pharmaceuticals. The School was named for Eshelman in 2008. Mickey Watts ’63 Receives UNC Pharmacy Alumni Award

Mitchell W. “Mickey” Watts has been awarded the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Alumni Association’s 2013 Distinguished Service Award. Watts is a 1963 graduate of the School and received the award at its annual Recognition Dinner in Chapel Hill on September 18. Watts is president of the Pharmacy Network Foundation, an organization whose goal is to improve the delivery and quality of pharmaceutical care to the public. He helped establish the Pharmacy Network of North Carolina, a benefit-management company, in 1986. More than 200 alumni returned to Chapel Hill for Alumni Weekend 2014. The weekend kicked off with the 21st Annual Golf Tournament, a Chapel Hill/Carrboro Food Tour, and the 2nd Annual CE Connections seminar with Jay Groce (BSPharm ’83). Eshelman Gives $3 Million to School’s Drug-Discovery Center

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy has received a $3 million gift from philanthropist and pharmaceutical-industry executive Fred Eshelman. Eshelman’s gift will support the work of the School’s Center for Integrative Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery.  The center is dedicated to evaluating and developing potential drug targets discovered by UNC faculty. The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is one of the nation’s top pharmacy schools. Yingling Receives Alumni Distinguished Service Award

Gary Yingling, a 1962 graduate of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, received the UNC Pharmacy Alumni Association’s 2012 Distinguished Service Award at the Pharmacy Foundation of North Carolina’s Annual Foundation Dinner on August 22. Each year, the UNC Pharmacy Alumni Association selects an alumnus or alumna whose accomplishments and contributions have enhanced the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and the pharmacy profession at the local, state, national, and international levels to receive the Distinguished Service Award. Preceptor and Residency Alumna Branham Named NCAP Community Pharmacist of the Year

Ashley Branham, PharmD, an alumna of the community pharmacy residency program at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been named the 2013 Community Care Pharmacist of the Year by the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists. Branham is the director of clinical services at Moose Pharmacy in Concord, North Carolina. She is also a clinical pharmacist at Cabarrus Family Medicine. Lloyd Receives School’s Burrus Community Service Award

Hillsborough pharmacist Evelyn Lloyd received the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s highest award for community service at the School’s April 14 awards ceremony. Lloyd received the 2013 Samuel B. Burrus Family Award for Community Service, which is presented to alumni and students who exhibit outstanding and unselfish civic, community, or church volunteer service outside the scope of regular pharmacy practice. The award is funded by the Pharmacy Foundation of North Carolina and is given by the Burrus family in memory of Samuel B. Burrus, a 1915 graduate of the Southern College of Pharmacy in Atlanta. Eshelman Gives $2.5 Million to Fund Instruction, Research

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has received a $2.5 million gift from alumnus Fred Eshelman, PharmD, to expand the School’s research programs and help transform the classroom experience for pharmacy students.
