Class of 1937 Pharmacy Alumnus Remembered in New World War II Book
May 11, 2018A UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy alumnus is memorialized in a new book about World War II. “Iwo Jima’s Battlefield Promise” tells the story of the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of two officers and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill alumni who happened to meet by chance during the chaotic fighting. The book focuses on the encounter between Capt. Edward Stephenson, a 1937 graduate of the School, and Maj. James Scales, both U.S. Marine Corps officers from small towns in North Carolina. Alumna Lisa Grimes Shares Book of Life Lessons at UNC
April 20, 2018Lisa T. Grimes, a UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy alumna returned to campus Wednesday, April 18, to share insights from her new book. Grimes, a 1985 graduate of the School, and her coauthor, fellow UNC-Chapel Hill alumna Paula Brown Stafford, M.P.H., discussed their book, “Remember Who You Are: Achieve Success, Create Balance, Experience Fulfillment,” at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. School Identifies Areas for Improvement at Diversity Symposium
December 1, 2017The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy hosted its first symposium addressing the practice of leveraging diversity for innovation. The “Art and Science of Diversity and Inclusion” was held at the Carolina Inn on Friday, Sept. 8. Alumni and current students from underrepresented backgrounds provided their perspectives. The event was organized by the Office of Innovative Leadership and Diversity and the Office of Student and Curricular Affairs on behalf of the School. Alumna Meg Powell Talks with Young Innovators about Clinical Trials
August 10, 2017Meg Powell, Pharm.D., M.B.A., a 2000 graduate of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, visited the Young Innovators Program on Monday, July 17, to talk about her work as CEO of TARGET PharmaSolutions and her journey as a pharmacist. Powell spoke to the interns and answered their questions for about 75 minutes. Her presentation focused on clinical trials, offering insight into their history and the way they operate today under Food and Drug Administration regulation. Professor Emeritus George Cocolas Dies, Served School More than 40 Years
December 21, 2016Professor Emeritus George Cocolas, Ph.D., a member of the School’s faculty for more than 40 years, died Monday, Dec. 19, after a brief illness. His funeral will be held Friday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Durham. Cocolas joined the faculty of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 1958 and retired in 1999. During his long tenure at the School, Cocolas was chair of the Division of Medicinal Chemistry from 1975 to 1982 and served as associate dean for 17 years. September 29, 2015Donna Gutterman, Pharm.D., M.B.A., a 1979 graduate of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and president of pharmaceutical and medical consulting firm Onesta, Inc., is the 2015 recipient of the UNC Pharmacy Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award. Gutterman has served on the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Foundation Board since 2012 and the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Board of Visitors since 2004.
