The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy held its inaugural Alumni Summit on August 28. The summit focused on strategies for achieving diversity in the student population. Attendees provided guidance and ideas to enhance the School’s efforts to reach diverse populations of students from the middle grades through college. Alumni Couple Receive Highest Honor from Board of Trustees

Vaughn and Nancy Bryson, 1960 graduates of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, received the William Richardson Davie Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Board of Trustees. Established by the Board in 1984, the Davie Award recognizes extraordinary service to the University or society and is the Board’s highest honor. It is named for the Revolutionary War hero who is considered the father of the University. Chancellor Holden Thorp and the Board honored the recipients at a Carolina Inn dinner on November 19. School of Pharmacy Named for Alumnus Fred Eshelman

The School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill today was named in honor of Fred Eshelman, a 1972 graduate of the School and founder and chief executive officer of Wilmington-based PPD Inc. The School now is the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Eshelman has been a member of the School of Pharmacy’s Board of Visitors for more than a decade and has lectured at the School as an adjunct faculty member. On the heels of his recent $9 million gift to the School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Fred Eshelman has contributed another $1 million to support the School’s Educational Renaissance initiatives, which attracted $1 million in matching funds from the Pharmacy Network Foundation. Eshelman Pledge Pushes Carolina First Total to $2.3 Billion

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chancellor James Moeser today announced that the Carolina First Campaign raised $2.38 billion to finish as the fifth largest completed campaign in higher education and the largest completed fund-raising drive at a university in the South. A $9 million pledge to the UNC School of Pharmacy from Fred Eshelman of Wilmington pushed the campaign to that historic mark. Eshelman, UCRF Give School $18 million for Cancer Research

Fred Eshelman, CEO and founder of Wilmington-based PPD Inc., has pledged $9 million to support cancer research at the School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The board of North Carolina’s University Cancer Research Fund matched the gift, generating a total investment of $18 million. Henry L. Smith ’72 Receives 2005 PAA Distinguished Service Award

Henry Lewis Smith received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Pharmacy Alumni Association Thursday night in Chapel Hill.
