Company Expands Funding for Fellows Program from Two Years to Four UNC School of Pharmacy graduate students Xin Ming, Jeannie Padowski, and Brandon Swift have been named 2006–2008 Eli Lilly and Co.-UNC Predoctoral Fellows in Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Drug Disposition. Over the past four years, Lilly has provided funding for two predoctoral fellows in this program. Sassano Selected as Amgen Fellow

Maria “Flori” Sassano, a third-year graduate student in the Division of Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products, has been selected as the School’s 2006-2007 Amgen Fellow. Sassano’s research focuses on improving the side effects of Paclitaxel, a drug commonly used in the treatment of ovarian, metastatic breast, and advanced non-small-cell lung cancers, and in treating squamous-cell carcinoma of the head and neck. “Paclitaxel presents high response rates for the treatment of these diseases, but its toxic side effects and poor solubility are major obstacles that need to be addressed and improved,” Sassano said. “My research focuses on the identification of a high-affinity aptamer that … Read more


Graduate Students Win AAPS Award

Maciej Zamek-Gliszczynski and Cory Kalvass, graduate students in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, have received the 2006 American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Drug Metabolism Award. PPDM recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to the promotion and dissemination of PPDM principles through exemplary and sustained activities in the achievement of PPDM goals.


Olson Named GSK Fellow

Emily Olson, a graduate student in the Division of Molecular Pharmaceutics, has been awarded the 2006-2007 GlaxoSmithKline Fellowship. “The Graduate Student Organization and the graduate education committee have made an excellent choice by selecting Emily for the 2006-2007 GSK fellowship,” said Dhiren Thakker, associate dean of research and graduate education. “Their choice was based on Emily’s leadership and her many contributions to the graduate program at the School of Pharmacy in her role as the president of the GSO.  Emily was an excellent spokesperson for students on the strategic planning committee, and contributed in a very meaningful way to the development of the strategic plan for the School. Ghibellini Awarded Travel Grant

Giulia Ghibellini, a graduate student in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, has been awarded a travel grant to attend the 14th North American International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics meeting. Ghibellini’s abstract, “In Vitro Characterization and Pharmacokinetic Modeling of Tc-99m Mebrofenin Hepatobiliary Disposition in Humans” was selected as a finalist in the postdoctoral category in the ISSX award program.


Chen Presents Poster at ISPOR Meeting

Shih-Yin (Sharon) Chen, a second-year doctoral student in the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy, presented her poster “Cost-utility Analysis of Tegaserod for the Treatement of Irritable Bowel Syndrome” at the 11th annual ISPOR meeting in May. Chen’s poster was recognized as “high impact” and was among the top 25 percent eligible for poster awards.


Graduate Student Wins Impact Recognition Award

Tim Wigle, a graduate student in the Division of Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products, has won a 2006 Impact Recognition Award. The awards, sponsored by the UNC Graduate Education Advancement Board, recognize graduate students whose research provides special benefits to the citizens of North Carolina. In 2004, tens of thousands of North Carolinians acquired antibiotic resistant infections that led to more than 1,000 unnecessary deaths and cost the state’s health care system nearly $1 billion. Oraefo Inducted into Frank Porter Graham Honor Society

Adaora Oraefo, a third-year PharmD student, was inducted into the Frank Porter Graham Honor Society on March 21. The Society was created in 1990 in honor of former University of North Carolina system President Frank Porter Graham. Inductees are graduate and professional students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who have demonstrated service above and beyond requirements for their degrees or position. The society also recognizes faculty, staff, and friends of the University who have made significant contributions to the development of graduate and professional student education.


Student Group Receives Institute on Aging Award

Doctor of pharmacy students from the UNC School of Pharmacy were awarded first prize for their poster in the category of “Campus-Community Collaboration” at the third annual Aging Exchange held on January 24 at the Friday Center. The students receiving the award were third-year pharmacy students Ted Hancock, Glenda Shell, Jessica Nonnemache, Allison Tuell, and second year student Steve Gilmore. A cash prize was awarded to the students, who were presenting the poster on behalf of the Geriatric Interest Group at the UNC School of Pharmacy.
