School of Pharmacy Announces Amgen Fellowship

Amgen, a global biotechnology company that discovers, develops, manufactures, and markets important human therapeutics based on advances in cellular and molecular biology, has provided a gift to the UNC School of Pharmacy to support a senior graduate student during the 2005-2006 academic year. This gift will establish a fellowship for a third or fourth year graduate student in pharmaceutical sciences whose research is focused on drug disposition or drug delivery. School of Pharmacy Announces Amgen Fellow

Amanda Mathis, a fourth-year PhD student in the Division of Drug Delivery and Disposition, has been selected as the School of Pharmacy ‘s first Amgen Fellow. Mathis’s research project focuses on intracellular distribution of new drugs being developed to treat international infectious diseases, such as African sleeping sickness, malaria and leishmaniasis. Her adviser is associate professor J.Ed. School of Pharmacy Graduate Student Awarded Prestigious Fellowship

Ding Xu, a graduate student in the Division of Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products, has received a predoctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association (MidAtlantic Affiliate). The award is worth $20,000 a year for two years. Ding’s research project, “Understanding substrate recognition mechanism of heparan sulfate 3-O-sulfotransferase,” is overseen by his adviser, Dr. Jian Liu. “Being awarded this fellowship is a great honor,” said Xu. “Understanding how the body creates heparan sulfate will be of great benefit to the medical community and society as a whole.” Xu’s project is designed to understand how heparan sulfate, a molecule on the surface … Read more


PharmD Student Karl Ruch a Finalist in Local Songwriting Contest

The winners of the 8th annual N.C. Songwriters’ contest were named Nov. 12 following a show at the Carrboro ArtsCenter featuring all eight finalists. The winner of this year’s contest was Sonya Lorelle of Norfolk, Va., with her songs, “There’s Something” and “Bedtime Story.” She was joined by second-place winner Brian Hershberger of Hillsborough, with “These Old Friends of Mine” and “Twice in a Blue Moon,” and, in third place, Tara Allison of Monroe, with “If I Knew You Then” and “Never Far Away.” The remaining finalists were Chuck Champion of Mebane, with “Three Day Weekend” and “For a Moment”; … Read more


SOP establishes AAPS Student Chapter

The UNC School of Pharmacy has established an American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists student chapter. The funding provided by AAPS will be used to bring speakers to the School (for example, industry leaders speaking about drug development processes and career paths within their respective companies), for industry tours, and for a seminar on women in the pharmaceutical industry. The chapter will offer social events to bring together students and faculty from the School’s different divisions to share ideas and to encourage collaboration within the academic community.
