School, University startups continue to boost economy in North Carolina, beyond

The economic impact of startups connected with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill continues to grow across the Tar Heel State. A recent semi-annual analysis conducted by Innovate Carolina, UNC-Chapel Hill’s innovation services hub and University-wide initiative for innovation and entrepreneurship, reported the positive effect of UNC-affiliated startups during the past fiscal year as the COVID-19 pandemic dampened local and global economies. Ronit Freeman, Jim Hagood awarded grant by Eshelman Institute for Innovation to pursue research in lung fibrosis

The Eshelman Institute for Innovation recently awarded Ronit Freeman, Ph.D., and Jim Hagood, MD, a $350,000 opportunistic grant to pursue research in lung fibrosis. The award will fund the development of a new peptide-based approach to reverse lung fibrosis and will identify and validate a chemical lead to test for clinical use. UNC team leads resource for evaluation of research training programs

UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and UNC School of Medicine leaders in professional development created a resource to help the National Institutes of Health evaluate T32 graduate and postdoctoral training programs at universities across the country. School honors, remembers life of Distinguished Professor Kuo-Hsiung Lee, Ph.D.

UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Distinguished Professor Kuo-Hsiung Lee, Ph.D., passed away Oct. 24, at the age of 81. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 6, at 2 p.m. in the Mausoleum Chapel at Raleigh Memorial Park. Dr. Lee was a world-renowned natural product chemist in the School’s Division of Chemical Biology & Medicinal Chemistry (and served as Division Chair from ’98-‘99). He recently retired from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in June, after more than 50 years of service to our state and School.
