Sam Lai Promoted to Associate Professor

Sam Lai, Ph.D., has been promoted to associate professor with tenure in the Division of Molecular Pharmaceutics. Lai’s research focuses on mucosal immunology and mucosal barriers to infectious disease, antibody response to synthetic materials, targeted nanoparticle delivery using bispecific fusion proteins, and computational modeling of physiological processes. Since joining the School in 2010, Lai has established the E(I) Lab program for UNC students from different subject areas to design, develop and assess solutions to unmet health-care needs. Removing a Brain Tumor Makes Remaining Cancer More Aggressive, UNC Study Finds

Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeking a better treatment for glioblastoma have discovered that removing a brain tumor causes any cancer left behind to grow 75 percent faster than the original tumor did, which helps to explain why this cancer is so lethal. “The thing that is deadly about this disease is that it diffusely invades the brain. Pharmacy Student Team Selected for CUBE Social Innovations Challenge

Patterson Named Fellow of the Heart Failure Society of America

Professor Herb Patterson, Pharm.D., is a member of the inaugural group of fellows of the Heart Failure Society of America, one of the most distinguished appointments the organization offers its members. Brown Named Mutual Drug Clinical Programs Coordinator, Residency Co-Director

Patrick Brown, Pharm.D., has been named clinical programs coordinator for Mutual Drug in a shared position with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. In this position, he will be responsible for establishing the Mutual Clinical Network and connecting it to research and educational support at UNC. Syringes a Surprising Source of Wasted Medication, UNC Study Finds

When medicine is injected, a little bit stays behind in the syringe. It’s not much, but depending on syringe design and the cost of the drug, this waste — or dead space — can add up to as much as $2,300 per year for a patient, according to a new study from researchers at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and RTI International. Lei Miao Is First Recipient of Feng Liu Award

Lei Miao, a graduate student in the Division of Molecular Pharmaceutics, is the first recipient of the Feng Liu Graduate Student Award. Maio’s thesis topic is the “Role of Tumor Desmoplasia in Nanoparticle Delivery of Drugs and Genes.” She has had eleven papers published in scholarly journals with seven more in review and is co-holder of a patent for delivering drugs to tumor using nanoparticles coated with polylactic co-glycolic acid. Miao earned a B.S. in pharmaceutics from Shandong University in 2012.
