Take a book, share a book: local seventh grader creates community library for UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy
April 5, 2023Are you an avid reader or addicted to sharing any new resource you come across? If so, you’re in luck because used textbooks, pharmacy research resources and fun-reads now have a new home at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Thanks to Max Bachelder, a seventh grader at Culbreth Middle School and the son of Kristy Ainslie, Ph.D., Fred Eshelman Distinguished Professor and chair of the Division of Pharmacoengineering and Molecular Pharmaceutics, the School now has a mini library where students, faculty and staff can take and share “big brain books”. Engaging the community through science
April 4, 2023Thousands of people experienced science firsthand at the annual UNC Science Expo. The Morehead Planetarium and Science Center hosted the annual Expo on April 1 in partnership with students and faculty from Carolina. UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy staff set up a booth where people could experience different aspects of pharmacy. Kids went through a geriatric simulation by putting on special glasses and gloves to try to open a prescription bottle and read the medication instructions. More work must be done to reduce acetaminophen hepatotoxicity
March 20, 2023Acetaminophen is the most commonly used pain reliever in the world, and in the U.S., more than 52 million people use it on a weekly basis. It has a great safety record when consumed in recommended amounts, but it can cause serious and even fatal liver toxicity when recommended doses are exceeded. Pills that contain both acetaminophen and opiates are a particular concern since pain patients and opioid abusers may be more likely to exceed recommended doses of acetaminophen seeking the opioid effects.
