Ferreri One of 40 to Attend Nonprescription Medicines Academy Conference

Stefanie Ferreri, PharmD, was one of forty-four participants at the ninth annual Nonpresecription Medicines Academy Conference held October 5–7 in Cincinnati. The conference is for college faculty who provide instruction on nonprescription medicines and medical devices. The conference included topics such as education, research, and public health issues. Each participant provided a brief presentation or a poster on an instructional innovation, project or research initiative in the area of nonprescription medicines. White-Harris Receives Inaugural Mentoring Award

Carla White-Harris, a clinical assistant professor at the UNC School of Pharmacy, received one of the University’s first Carolina Women’s Leadership Council Mentoring Awards, which was presented at the council’s recent annual meeting. The award recognizes outstanding faculty members who go the extra mile to guide, mentor, and lead students and junior faculty members as they make important career decisions, embark on innovative research challenges and enrich their lives through public service, teaching, and meaningful educational opportunities. Scott Named as a John Payne Fellow

Mollie Scott, PharmD, is a recipient of the 2006 John Payne Fellowship. The fellowship is awarded annually to one or more faculty members of the AHECs in North Carolina. It provides support to allow the Payne Fellow to study some aspect of health professions education relevant to the AHEC Program. Projects emphasize lifelong learning, involving experiences and activities which explore new models, new ways of thinking, and innovation. Stefanie Ferreri, clinical assistant professor, recently participated in the Nonprescription Medicines Academy as one of 42 faculty attendees representing colleges and schools of pharmacy from North America. The Nonprescription Medicines Academy is planned exclusively for college of pharmacy faculty who provide instruction on nonprescription medicines and medical devices. The goal of the conference is to facilitate a learning environment and networking opportunity for faculty to advance education and research in the area of nonprescription therapy. SOP Announces New Director of Student Services

Wendy Cox, PharmD, has been named as director of student services for the School of Pharmacy. Cox’s appointment will become effective on September 12th. Cox, who received her PharmD in 1998 from UNC, completed a pharmacy practice residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1999 and a primary care specialty residency affiliated with Campbell University in 2000. She currently serves as director of pharmacotherapy services for the Wake AHEC and as a clinical assistant professor for the School of Pharmacy. Cox is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist and a certified diabetes educator.


Pneumococcal Vaccination Project Selected for Funding by the National Immunization Program

Stefanie Ferreri, clinical assistant professor in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, has received a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Immunization Program. Ferreri will receive $149,000 for a one-year project, “Enhancing Pneumococcal Vaccine Rates Through Community Pharmacist Involvement,” which will be carried out in conjunction with Kroger pharmacies. Only one award is made nationally. Pneumococcal infection causes an estimated 40,000 deaths annually in the United States, accounting for more deaths than any other vaccine-preventable bacterial disease. Vaughan Wins Leadership Award

K.T. Vaughan has been busy since graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2001 with a master’s in library science. In addition to being appointed as an adjunct clinical assistant professor in the UNC School of Pharmacy, Vaughan recently was awarded the American Society for Information Science and Technology’s James M. Cretsos Leadership Award for her contributions to the organization.
