Carpenter named vice chair of Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy, Asheville campus
December 3, 2019The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is thrilled to announce that Delesha Carpenter, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., will become the new Vice Chair for the Asheville campus for the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy (DPOP) effective December 1, 2019. This position was created to help expand the division’s and school’s work at the UNC Health Sciences at Mountain Area Health Education campus. Carpenter joined DPOP in 2010 as a postdoctoral research fellow. Assistant professor creates new course to bridge research, patient care
November 26, 2019According to Megan Roberts, Ph.D., it takes about 17 years for 14 percent of research to benefit patient care. Roberts, an assistant professor and director of Implementation Science in Precision Health and Society at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy began to ask questions about the statistic. “How can we make sure that our research benefits patients? Researchers find increase risk in potentially unsafe medication prescribing for veterans using both Department of Veterans Affairs, Medicare Part D drug benefits
August 8, 2019In a recent study, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy researchers found that veterans 65 years and older who used both Veterans Affairs and Medicare Part D drug benefits were associated with a higher exposure to potentially unsafe medication prescribing. Among the 279,940 medicare-eligible older veterans receiving a prescription from the VA, researchers found 18.9 percent also received health care elsewhere (dual use). Research indicated that dual use of VA and Part D prescription drug benefits correlated with an almost two-fold increase in the odds of exposure to any potentially unsafe medication compared with VA-only use, and more than three times … Read more

New Study Shows Cost Effectiveness of Early Screenings for High-Risk Cancer Patients
February 4, 2019New research from the University of Utah and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill shows how early cancer screening and surveillance in patients with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS) results in additional years of life and is cost effective for third-party payers. LFS is an inherited genetic condition that greatly increases the risk of developing several types of cancer. People diagnosed with LFS have a one in two chance of developing cancer by 30, and a nearly 100 percent risk of developing cancer in their lifetime, compared to the lifetime cancer risk of the average person of almost 40 percent. Alan Kinlaw Joins DPOP as Assistant Professor
November 8, 2018Alan Kinlaw, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., has been hired as a tenure-track assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, in the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy. Kinlaw joins the School after a post-doctoral fellowship at UNC’s Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, where he worked under Timothy Carey, M.D., M.P.H. He earned his Ph.D. in 2016 and his M.S.P.H. in 2012, both from the Department of Epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Kinlaw is also a graduate of N.C.
