School ranks No. 2 in nation in research funding with over $75 million

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy ranks No. 2 among the nation’s pharmacy schools in total research funding according to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.   The School received over $75 million in research grants during the federal fiscal year, October 2021-September 2022 (FY22), nearly doubling the $39 million research total from 2019. There were 84 funded investigators who received $75,082,027 in awards from all funding sources. School receives grant to help launch rural pharmacy hubs

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy was recently awarded $815,000 over three years from The Duke Endowment to launch rural pharmacy hubs as part of the School’s Rural Pharmacy Health Initiative. This grant, led by principal investigator Betsy Sleath, Ph.D., enables the School to extend its reach into underserved communities across North Carolina to improve access to care in these areas while creating new, sustainable models for rural health care.  The Duke Endowment grant will support two pharmacy hubs that will launch over the next three years across Eastern North Carolina. AACP Distinguished Preceptor Recognition Program selects Pete Koval

Associate Professor Pete Koval, Pharm.D., BCPS, CPP, has been chosen for the 2023 AACP Distinguished Preceptor Recognition Program, which recognizes individuals for their sustained commitment to excellence in experiential education and professional practice.   He is Director of Pharmacy Education with the Piedmont Area Health Education Center in Greensboro and a Clinical Pharmacist with Cone Health Family Medicine.   Koval has precepted more than 700 months of pharmacy students/residents and has mentored 50 ambulatory care-focused pharmacy residents. Faculty receives AACP Emerging Teaching Scholar Award

Assistant Professor Jackie Zeeman, Pharm.D., has received the 2023 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Emerging Teaching Scholar Award. This award recognizes excellence in academic pharmacy faculty engaged in the scholarship of teaching and learning.   Her research focuses on the assessment of student learning in informal learning environments, including interprofessional education and co-curricular activities, and strategies to use assessment data to inform curricular initiatives.  “My expertise resides in the scholarship of education, with a focus on assessing experiences that impact student learning and utilizing findings to guide data-driven decision making in curriculum and program development,” Zeeman said.  She shares … Read more


Serving our State through the Tar Heel Bus Tour

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy received two Tar Heel Bus Tour grants that support research projects addressing some of the health care needs of North Carolinians.  The purpose of the grants is to foster collaborative research stemming from ideas or conversations that occurred as a result of the 2019 and 2022 Tar Heel Bus Tours.   One grant will help educate underserved youth in rural communities about various health issues, and the other will help develop training for pharmacists to help reduce opioid overdose deaths.   After a 10-year break, Chancellor Kevin M. Structural Genomics Consortium receives $1.5 million grant to help find possible new treatment options for patients with ALS

The U.S. Department of Defense awarded Alison Axtman, Ph.D. in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC-UNC) a two-year grant totaling $1.5 million. The grant will go toward research that could one day lead to new medications and new treatment options for patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.   ALS is a neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. Faculty receive grant funding for project studying access to childhood vaccines through community pharmacies in rural communities

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation awarded the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy a $250,000 research grant. The grant will help fund the research project entitled, “Evaluating Access to Childhood Vaccines Through Rural Community Pharmacies.”    Through this project, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy researchers will work with pharmacy partners to help ensure children in rural North Carolina communities have access to vaccinations.  “We were seeking forward-thinking, community-centered projects that would explore creative solutions to some of the most pressing public health problems facing diverse and underserved communities across the U.S.,” said NACDS Foundation President Sara Roszak.  … Read more


Duke Endowment Grant to Support Pharmacist-Provided Contraception

UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Regional Associate Dean Mollie Scott has been awarded a $705,000 grant from The Duke Endowment to support the implementation of pharmacist-provided hormonal contraception across the state of North Carolina. Unintended pregnancies are a significant public health concern that increase health care costs, medical complications, mental health concerns and negatively impact women and families.
