Kashuba Receives $2 Million to Explore HIV-Prevention Drug Discovery

Angela Kashuba, PharmD, is concerned that the current approach to developing drug therapies to prevent HIV infection is backwards. “We know that administering large doses of HIV drugs in animal models can prevent infection, but this information doesn’t directly help us prevent infections in people,” she says. “In this particular case, the doses being used in animals may be too toxic for people.” “We need to make more  informed progress toward protecting people, and it’s time we changed the paradigm.” In support of this goal, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases award a grant to the UNC Eshelman … Read more


Kashuba on UNC Team to Lead National Effort to Cure AIDS

Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have been awarded a five-year, $32 million federal grant to develop ways to cure people with HIV by purging the virus hiding in the immune systems of patients taking antiretroviral therapy. Tackling this latent virus is considered key to a cure for AIDS. Angela Kashuba, PharmD, will direct the preclinical and clinical pharmacology studies as director of the project’s clinical pharmacology core. Kashuba is director of the UNC Center for AIDS Research Clinical Pharmacology and Analytic Chemistry Core and an associate professor in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics. … Read more

UNC Hospitals and the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy honored professor Fred Eckel, MS, on June 28 at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center during a reception to recognize the 2011 class of pharmacy residents for completing their residencies. Eckel, a faculty member in the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education, joined the School in 1966 and established the UNC Hospital Residency Program in 1967. To honor his accomplishments, the residency program presented Eckel with a newly established Pharmacy Leadership Award bearing his name. Eckel also delivered a lecture on lessons he learned over the course of his career. … Read more

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy held a reception at the Carolina Inn on June 24, 2011, to honor Steve Caiola, MS, who is entering phased retirement after a distinguished career that has spanned more than forty years at the School. Since coming to UNC in 1969, Caiola, chair of the School’s Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education, has served in a variety of positions responsible for educating pharmacists. K. H. Lee Receives Rising Sun Award from Japan

Kuo-Hsiung Lee, PhD, the Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, by the government of Japan for his contributions to the development of medicinal chemistry in that nation. In his forty-one-year career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, more than eighty Japanese scholars have honed their understanding of medicinal chemistry under Dr. Lee’s tutelage. Alexander Tropsha, PhD, has been named as the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s new associate dean for research charged with overseeing the School’s research and graduate education programs. Ferreri Named Interim Chair of DPPEE as Caiola Retires

Stefanie Ferreri, PharmD, has been named as interim chair of the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. She succeeds Steve Caiola, MS, who will be starting phased retirement beginning July 1. Ferreri is a clinical associate professor and director of the PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residency Program. Heparin Expert Jian Liu Promoted to Professor
