Olivia Dong Receives Brewington Award

Olivia Dong, a doctoral student in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, is the recipient of the School’s Kathryne A. Brewington Graduate Student Research Award for 2017. The School presents the award annually to the most outstanding doctoral student in pharmaceutical sciences in honor of Brewington’s commitment to public service and higher education. Under the guidance of her research adviser, Tim Wiltshire, Ph.D., Dong has been instrumental in the development of a new pharmacogenetic test, DNA2RxTM. Persky Promoted to Clinical Professor

Adam M. Persky, Ph.D., has been promoted to clinical professor. He served previously as a clinical associate professor in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics. Persky has been at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy since 2004. From 2011 to 2013 he was the director of the Center for Educational Excellence in Pharmacy where he worked to promote innovative teaching practices at the School. Patients Satisfied with Pharmacists Conducting Wellness Visits

Patients undergoing a Medicare annual wellness visit say they would be satisfied and comfortable with having a clinical pharmacist practitioner working alone conduct the visit rather than having a physician do it, according to a new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Having a pharmacist conduct wellness visits frees up physicians to focus on patients’ chronic and acute health conditions. Continuing Education for Pharmacists Falls Short on Naloxone

Pharmacists who are allowed to dispense naloxone, an opioid reversal agent, without a prescription are often uncomfortable talking to patients about the drug, and the profession’s continuing education programs aren’t helping, according to a new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Over the past 20 years, opioid-related overdoses have increased fourfold, killing more than 42,000 people in 2016. As of January 2017, pharmacists in 13 states were able to dispense naloxone without a physician prescription. Patterson Named New Mentoring Director

Herbert Patterson, Pharm.D., executive vice chair of the division of pharmacotherapy and experimental pharmaceutics, was named director of the Bill and Karen Campbell Faculty Mentoring Program on Jan. 1. He succeeds Dhiren Thakker, Ph.D., who held the post for three years and is now interim dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Time to Get Serious about Nanomaterials Databases, UNC Scientists Say

Nanomaterials researchers urgently need well-structured and publicly accessible databases to advance their field, according to scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Research Triangle Institute. RTI transferred the Nanomaterial Registry database to UNC-Chapel Hill, and the University is offering it as a repository for the field’s collective knowledge. The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy administers the registry database. Peter Koval, Pharm.D., has been reappointed to serve a three-year term on the Board of Pharmacy Specialties Board of Directors and elected as the 2019 chair of the organization. Leaf Huang, Ph.D., and Bryan Roth, M.D., Ph.D., both faculty members at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, were included in Clarivate Analytics’ roster of the most highly cited researchers of 2017. Clarivate Analytics assembled the roster of more than 3,300 highly cited researchers. The researchers included have published a high number of papers that rank in the top 1 percent most cited in 21 fields of science from 2005 to 2015.
