Peter Koval, Pharm.D., has been reappointed to serve a three-year term on the Board of Pharmacy Specialties Board of Directors and elected as the 2019 chair of the organization. The chair commitment includes a year as chair-elect, a year as chair and a year as immediate past chair.

Koval is an associate professor of clinical education in the Division of Practice Advancement and Experiential Education and director of pharmacy education at the Greensboro Area Health Education Center. The Board of Pharmacy Specialties was established in 1976 by the American Pharmacists Association with the goal of improving patient care and recognizing specialized skill in pharmacy.

“Dr. Koval’s colleagues on the board quickly recognized his deep commitment to both the profession and to advancing patient care,” said William Ellis, M.S., executive director of the board. “His thoughtful and insightful contributions to the BPS board over the past three years made him the unanimous choice as chair-elect.”

Koval has served on the BPS Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Specialty Council since 2009 and as first chair of the Ambulatory Care Council from 2009 until 2011.  He began his current term on the BPS Board of Directors on Jan. 1.

Koval has been board certified in pharmacotherapy since 1998 and has been a practicing clinical pharmacist since 2006. As a clinical pharmacist, he works in collaboration with the Cone Health System and deals with tobacco cessation and managing chronic diseases.

In addition to serving as a preceptor for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Koval is also a director of pharmacy education at the Greensboro Area Health Education Center.
