Associate Professor Pete Koval, Pharm.D., BCPS, CPP, has been chosen for the 2023 AACP Distinguished Preceptor Recognition Program, which recognizes individuals for their sustained commitment to excellence in experiential education and professional practice.
He is Director of Pharmacy Education with the Piedmont Area Health Education Center in Greensboro and a Clinical Pharmacist with Cone Health Family Medicine.
Koval has precepted more than 700 months of pharmacy students/residents and has mentored 50 ambulatory care-focused pharmacy residents. In his collaborative practice, he strives to have pharmacy students and residents effectively participate in pharmacist-led direct patient care.
“I continue to enjoy being involved in the development of confidence and competence of pharmacists. It is great to be involved during key transitional periods of professional training,” said Koval.
He coordinates a seminar course for fourth-year students, Leading Change in Health Care, in which students demonstrate advanced skills in critical literature appraisal and presentation, apply quality improvement methodologies to problems in pharmacy and demonstrate understanding of pharmacy administration and health care policy fundamentals.
Koval has been teaching didactic courses at the School since 1997. He’s been an instructor on a number of topics in required and elective courses such as motivational interviewing, tobacco cessation, osteoporosis, professional development, board certification, interviewing and virtual interviewing skills.
“Pete is an exemplary educator, practitioner and leader. As a mentor and preceptor, he has had a profound positive impact on our learners’ pharmacy practice experiences and future careers. His service and commitment to the School and profession are exceptional. I am beyond grateful that he was recognized for this award and for his continued partnership with the School,” said Charlene Williams, Pharm.D., BCACP, CDCES, director of preceptor development and clinical associate professor in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education.
Koval is also active at the state and national levels. He was involved in developing the Board Certification in Ambulatory Care through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and served on their executive board. In North Carolina, he has made research and educational contributions through the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists and serves on the North Carolina Ambulatory Care Practice Forum.
“It is an honor to be nominated for this award and honestly the national recognition is simply priceless. I truly appreciate the support and collaboration of all my colleagues at UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy,” said Koval.
