Colmenares Selected for APhA and ASHP Student Leadership Awards

Evan Colmenares, a third-year Doctor of Pharmacy student at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, was selected for the Student Leadership Awards of both the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. “My commitment to participating in professional pharmacy associations stems from my interest in pharmacy policy and practice advancement efforts that both APhA and ASHP dedicate their resources to,” Colmenares said. PY4 Levine Receives APhA Foundation Charles C. Thomas Scholarship

The American Pharmacists Association Foundation has selected fourth-year Doctor of Pharmacy student Jennifer Levine as the 2016 recipient of the Charles C. Thomas scholarship. The APhA Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., received a record 92 applications from 62 schools and colleges of pharmacy. Of the applicants, eight students received scholarships this year. Scholarships are awarded to recognize exceptional demonstration of leadership skills and academics through active involvement in the APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists. School Earns Number One U.S. News Ranking among Pharmacy Schools

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is number one in the latest rankings of the nation’s Doctor of Pharmacy programs by U.S. News & World Report in the 2017 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools. The School placed second in the 2013 and 2009 U.S. News rankings, the last two times these ratings were compiled. PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residents Receive APhA Foundation Incentive Grants

Three PGY1 community pharmacy residents at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy are recipients of APhA Foundation Incentive Grants. They will be recognized at the APhA 2016 Annual Meeting and Exposition March 4–7 in Baltimore. Hannah Renner, Laura Rhodes and Breanna Sunderman were selected for the grant; Sunderman was also selected to present an APhA Patient Care Services Pearl, a 15-minute presentation about an innovation that would benefit pharmacists. Wendy Cox to Serve as Associate Dean For Curricular and Student Affairs

Wendy Cox, Pharm.D., is the new associate dean for curricular and student affairs at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, moving from her role as assistant dean for professional education effective January 1. Cox is also a clinical associate professor in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education. Cox’s new responsibilities include managing curricular issues, including the re-engineered Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum, and she will continue to oversee the Office of Student Affairs. Nithya Srinivas receives ASCPT Presidential Trainee Award

Nithya Srinivas, a Ph.D. student in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been awarded a 2016 Presidential Trainee Award through the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology Therapeutics. The award recognizes her abstract, “Antiretroviral Drug Exposure in Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) as a Predictor of Neurocognitive Outcomes in HIV Infected Patients,” and indicates it received a top score when compared to other project submitted by clinical pharmacologists in training. UNC Pharmacy Launches New Pharmacy Ownership Residency

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, in partnership with the National Community Pharmacists Association and Mutual Drug Company, has created a pharmacy residency program for new graduates interested in becoming independent community pharmacy owners. Beginning in the 2016–2017 academic year, the 12-month Independent Pharmacy Ownership Residency will place recent doctor of pharmacy graduates at one of two independently owned community pharmacies in North Carolina: Drugco Discount Pharmacy in Roanoke Rapids and Central Pharmacy in Durham. “The independent pharmacy ownership residency program will teach residents innovative and entrepreneurial techniques to be pharmacy owners in an evolving health-care market,” said Stefanie Ferreri, Pharm.D., … Read more


Four MOPH Graduate Students Receive NIH and NSF Fellowships

Four graduate students in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Division of Molecular Pharmaceutics have been awarded fellowships by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Karen Bulaklak received an NIH F31 Fellowship from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. PY3 Brian Kurish Appointed Vice Chair of ACCP Student Committee

When Brian Kurish attended the 2014 American College of Clinical Pharmacy’s annual meeting in Austin, Texas, as a second-year pharmacy student, he saw that the ACCP was a strong resource for involving students in clinical pharmacy.
