PY3 Student Kim Qualifies for National Patient Counseling Competition

Lisa Kim, a third-year doctor of pharmacy student at the School, will compete in the APhA-ASP National Patient Counseling Competition in March. Kim won the local level of the competition to earn the right to represent the School in the national competition, which will be held at the American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington, D.C., on March 12-15. The goal of the competition is to help student pharmacists become better patient educators. Gal, Koval Receive Grants for Second Life Projects

Peter Gal, PharmD, and Pete Koval, PharmD, faculty members in the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education, have received Lenovo Innovation Grants from the UNC Center for Faculty Excellence to develop projects in Second Life to help students in real life. Gal, a clinical professor, will use his $9,900 grant to create an orientation program on the virtual-reality social network to familiarize fourth-year doctor of pharmacy students with clinical practice in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) before they begin that portion of their practice-experience curriculum. The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy held the UNC-ECSU Pharmacy College Tour on November 18. About 40 undergraduate students from Elizabeth City State University received a tour of the School, took part in panel discussions, and participated in hands-on sessions where they learned how to take blood pressure and use DermaView machines and inhalers. Koval, Thrasher Named to Specialty Council

Two clinical associate professors at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy will serve on a new Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties council to develop a certification for ambulatory-care pharmacy specialists. Peter Koval, PharmD, and Kim Thrasher, PharmD, are both board certified pharmacotherapy specialists and faculty members in the School’s Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education. Koval is also the associate director of pharmacotherapy at the Greensboro Area Health Education Center, while Thrasher serves the same role at the South East AHEC. Graduate Student Schuck Receives TraC$2K Grant

Bob Schuck, PharmD, a graduate student at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has received a $2,000 grant from the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute for research looking into the role of an enzyme in the development of cardiovascular disease. The grant will support Schuck’s dissertation research study of the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase (ALOX5). ALOX5 synthesizes fatty molecules called leukotrienes, which promote inflammation. Genetic variation in ALOX5 has been associated with the development of cardiovascular disease, but the reason remains unclear. PharmD Student Wins RXportfolios National Achievement Award

Adam Overberg, a doctor of pharmacy student at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been named a winner of the RXportfolios National Achievement Award. Overberg, from Fayetteville, North Carolina, is a fourth-year student at the School. He earned a BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences from UNC in 2009. RXportfolios.com is a Web site that provides free online portfolios for pharmacists, students, and technicians. The National Achievement Award is judged on the quality and completeness of the contestants’ RXportfolios, and each school of pharmacy can have only one winner.

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores and the NACDS Foundation named Stefanie Ferreri, PharmD, as first runner-up for its new Community Pharmacy Faculty Award at the 2009 NACDS Pharmacy & Technology Conference held August 10 in Boston. The award, supported by Wyeth, was established to recognize a pharmacy school full-time or shared faculty member who has made significant contributions to the practice of community pharmacy through innovations in patient care. Faculty members are assessed on their accomplishments in advancing patient care through community pharmacy as well as preparation of future leaders in pharmacy care. Students Win Big at SNPhA National Meeting

Doctor of pharmacy students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy had a strong showing at the Student National Pharmaceutical Association National Meeting on July 17 through 20 in Chicago. Maurice Alexander received more than $15,000 in scholarships, winning regional and national awards for the Walmart/NPhA Future Leaders Scholarship, as well as the Rite Aid Endowed Scholarship. Three other students from the School received a $1,000 scholarship each: Stephen Clark received the Terrence and Teresa Burroughs Endowed Scholarship.
