The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has named the recipients of its 2008 preceptors and Area Health Education Center instructor of the year honors. Jennifer Askew, CPP, manager of outpatient/employee pharmacy services for New Hanover Health Network in Wilmington, has been named a Hospital Pharmacy Preceptor of the Year. Suzie Cala Harris, BCPP, a clinical pharmacy specialist in psychiatry at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, has been named AHEC Faculty Instructor of the Year. PharmD Program Rises to Second in U.S. News Rankings

The doctor of pharmacy program at the UNC School of Pharmacy is ranked second in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. The 2009 rankings were released March 28. Eshelman gift, match net $2 million for UNC pharmacy education

On the heels of his recent $9 million gift to the School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Fred Eshelman has contributed another $1 million to support the School’s Educational Renaissance initiatives, which attracted $1 million in matching funds from the Pharmacy Network Foundation. Eshelman is CEO and founder of Wilmington-based PPD Inc., a leading global contract research organization providing discovery, development and postapproval services as well as compound partnering programs to the biopharmaceutical industry. Two Residents Receive Incentive Grants

Two community pharmacy residents from the UNC School of Pharmacy have received incentive grants from the American Pharmacists Association Foundation to fund projects aimed at improving patient care through pharmacist intervention. Anthony Pudlo, PharmD, and Kyle Yoder, PharmD, each received a $1,000 Incentive Grant for Practitioner Innovation in Pharmaceutical Care. The grants are designed to offer pharmacists seed money to implement or support an existing patient care service within their pharmacy practice. Ferreri Named APhA Fellow

Stefanie Ferreri, PharmD, CDE, the director of the Community Pharmacy Residency Program at the UNC School of Pharmacy, has been elected as a fellow of the American Pharmacists Association by the APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management. Ferreri, a clinical assistant professor in the School’s Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education, will be recognized at an award ceremony at the APhA annual meeting in March in San Diego. Caiola Named Chair of New Division

Steve Caiola, MS, has been named chair of the new Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education at the UNC School of Pharmacy. Caiola, an associate professor, has served as interim chair of PPEE since it was established on July 1. He first came to UNC in 1969 as an instructor at the School and assistant director of pharmacy services at N.C. Memorial Hospital. Stefanie Ferreri, PharmD, CDE, a clinical assistant professor at the UNC School of Pharmacy, has been elected the chair of the Clinical/Pharmacotherapeutic Practice Section of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management. Ferreri’s tenure as section chair will last from March 2008 until March 2010. Her primary responsibilities will be to promote the professional practice interests of the APhA-APPM members, to establish programs and activities that serve the pharmacy practitioner, and to provide a means for members to participate in the APhA’s policy-making process. PharmD Student Lisa Adams Receives RESPy Award

Lisa Adams, a fourth-year professional student at the UNC School of Pharmacy, received a Respect, Excellence, and Service in Pharmacy award from Pharmacy Times magazine. Adams, who will be featured in an upcoming issue of Pharmacy Times, has been an active volunteer in the community, including service at UNC Children’s Hospital, Alterra Woods Retirement Community, the Piedmont Community Health Clinic, and various other clinics and health fairs.
