Helping oncology patients avoid acute care events

For oncology patients, emergency visits and unplanned hospital stays are common. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University to be awarded up to $50 million from the FDA for new research center

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will award up to $50 million over five years to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University to establish the Research Triangle Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation. The center will also involve collaborations with North Carolina State University and North Carolina Central University, a leading historically black university.  Triangle CERSI, the newest of only five CERSIs across the country, will work with FDA scientists to perform cutting edge scientific research to better inform and support the FDA’s needs. Monash University students research with CIPhER

Five pharmacy students from Monash University in Australia, a PharmAlliance partner, recently completed their eight-week visiting scholars program with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Center for Innovative Pharmacy Education and Research (CIPhER).  Each visiting scholar is a fourth-year honor student in Monash’s Master of Pharmacy program. They will complete the master’s course after their upcoming fifth-year internship. Study finds female authorship is underrepresented across drug delivery journals

Female authorship in drug delivery related journals should increase to better represent the work of female senior authors according to a study done by UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Professor Kristy Ainslie, Ph.D. and Associate Professor Jacqui McLaughlin, Ph.D.  First and last authorship on publications is an important metric of productivity and scholarly success for trainees and professors. McLaughlin and Ainslie found that, based on 11 drug delivery related journals in 2021, scholarly papers were about one and a half times more likely to have a male first author and three times more likely to have a male last author. … Read more


School ranks No. 2 in nation in research funding with over $75 million

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy ranks No. 2 among the nation’s pharmacy schools in total research funding according to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.   The School received over $75 million in research grants during the federal fiscal year, October 2021-September 2022 (FY22), nearly doubling the $39 million research total from 2019. There were 84 funded investigators who received $75,082,027 in awards from all funding sources. Brain slice technology opens the door for personalized cancer treatment

Structural Genomics Consortium receives $1.5 million grant to help find possible new treatment options for patients with ALS

The U.S. Department of Defense awarded Alison Axtman, Ph.D. in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC-UNC) a two-year grant totaling $1.5 million. The grant will go toward research that could one day lead to new medications and new treatment options for patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.   ALS is a neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. Faculty receive grant funding for project studying access to childhood vaccines through community pharmacies in rural communities

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Foundation awarded the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy a $250,000 research grant. The grant will help fund the research project entitled, “Evaluating Access to Childhood Vaccines Through Rural Community Pharmacies.”    Through this project, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy researchers will work with pharmacy partners to help ensure children in rural North Carolina communities have access to vaccinations.  “We were seeking forward-thinking, community-centered projects that would explore creative solutions to some of the most pressing public health problems facing diverse and underserved communities across the U.S.,” said NACDS Foundation President Sara Roszak.  … Read more


Students share research findings at poster presentation

Third year Pharm.D. students in the Research and Scholarship in Pharmacy (RASP) pathway presented their research findings to peers, faculty and staff members of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy on April 19.  RASP is a longitudinal, selective pathway within the Doctor of Pharmacy elective curriculum built around a mentored, in-depth, scholarly project.
