Pharm.D. students recognized at 2019 Student National Pharmaceutical Association convention

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s chapter of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) was well-represented at the organization’s 2019 national conference. SNPhA is a national Pharm.D. student association whose goal is to improve access to healthcare among historically underserved populations. Each chapter plans and executes local disease awareness and prevention initiatives with oversight from the national organization. Soumya Rahima Benhabbour, Ph.D., is from the North African country of Morocco where, according to UNAIDS, there has been a 42 percent reduction in new HIV infections since 2010. Faculty member honored with international new investigator award

When Jackie Zeeman conducts research, she’s hoping her findings will leave the world a little better than she found it. Her most recent work, “Identifying Traits and Building Consensus on Priority Leadership and Professionalism Attributes in Pharmacy Education,” left that mark on an international level. Zeeman was one of four across the world invited to present research in the New Investigator Series at the 10th Biennial Monash Pharmacy Education Symposium in Prato, Italy, in July. Researchers find increase risk in potentially unsafe medication prescribing for veterans using both Department of Veterans Affairs, Medicare Part D drug benefits

In a recent study, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy researchers found that veterans 65 years and older who used both Veterans Affairs and Medicare Part D drug benefits were associated with a higher exposure to potentially unsafe medication prescribing. Among the 279,940 medicare-eligible older veterans receiving a prescription from the VA, researchers found 18.9 percent also received health care elsewhere (dual use). Research indicated that dual use of VA and Part D prescription drug benefits correlated with an almost two-fold increase in the odds of exposure to any potentially unsafe medication compared with VA-only use, and more than three times … Read more

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy curriculum focuses on combining classroom learning with patient-based care experiences. Whether it’s through a rotation or internship, students in all stages of the Pharm.D. track are utilizing their skills in a wide range of healthcare environments this summer. Pharm.D. students excel in dual-degree MBA, MPH programs

Through the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s dual-degree programs with the Kenan-Flagler Business School and the Gillings School of Global Public Health, Pharm.D. students can expand their career goals beyond the traditional pharmacy curriculum. For both the MBA and MPH dual-degree programs, students generally apply the first semester of their PY2 year. Once a student has been accepted into the dual degree program, they earn a Pharm.D. and a master’s of business administration or a Pharm.D. and a master’s of public health within five years. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Employee Forum gained three representatives from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy who will serve a one-year term. Those individuals include Katie Musgrove, program administrator for Kuo-Hsiung Lee’s Natural Products Research Laboratories; Kevin Robinson, director of photography within the School’s MEDIA group; and Clinton Miller, simulation educator at the School. Chinese student immersion program kicks off its second year

Undergraduate students from eight Chinese universities arrived July 14 at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy for the Innovations and Transformations in Pharmaceutical Sciences program. During the four-week experience, the visiting students live on UNC’s campus and learn more about pharmacy school in the United States, as well as various career options in the pharmaceutical field. The schedule includes faculty lectures from all five of the School’s Divisions, with topics from drug discovery to mental health pharmacotherapy.
