Marciniak Receives Faculty Development Fellowship

Macary Marciniak, PharmD, a clinical associate professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has received a faculty development fellowship from the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation and the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education. Marciniak will receive a $25,000 stipend, which will be matched by the School. It will support her research project, “Design and Development of a Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY2) Community Pharmacy Residency with a Focus in Academia.” Marciniak’s mentor for the fellowship is Clinical Associate Professor Stefanie Ferreri, PharmD, who directs the Community Pharmacy Residency Program at the School. Eckel to Receive Honorary Degree

Professor Fred Eckel will receive an honorary doctor of science in recognition of his contributions to the pharmacy profession from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia at the university’s commencement ceremonies on May 20. Eckel is a 1961 graduate of USP. According to the USP announcement, Eckel “has been a strong advocate for the university and dedicated to the advancement of pharmacy, as well as an inspiration to pharmacists throughout the nation.” The other degree recipients are Britton Chance, PhD, a professor emeritus in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at University of Pennsylvania. Bethea Receives Dissertation Completion Fellowship

Heather Bethea, a graduate student at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has received a Dissertation Completion Fellowship from the Graduate School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The fellowship provides a stipend of $16,000 for the 2009-2010 academic year, as well as a tuition-and-fees scholarship for three hours of doctoral dissertation credit. Bethea entered the School’s graduate program in 2005 after graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. Student, Alumna, Faculty Mentors Receive Travel Scholarships from AACP

A doctor of pharmacy student, two faculty members, and an alumna from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy have received travel scholarships from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. The recipients are: third-year student Kathryn Givens Merkel and her faculty mentor, clinical instructor Lisa Dinkins, PharmD; and alumna Megan Wheatley, PharmD, who is a resident at Moses Cone Health System in Greensboro, and her faculty mentor, clinical assistant professor Dawn Pettus, PharmD. Tropsha Receives UCRF Innovation Award

Alex Tropsha, PhD, a professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has received an Innovation Award from the University Cancer Research Fund. The award provides $100,000 over two years to support a project aimed at developing a novel virtual screening workflow to search for novel anti-cancer agents. Sleath Receives $2.65 Million Grant to Study Glaucoma Patients

Betsy Sleath, PhD, a professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has received a four-year, $2.65 million grant from the National Eye Institute to study how the communication between glaucoma patients and their doctors affects how well the patients take their medication and the effectiveness of the treatment. There is currently no cure for glaucoma, but it is possible to treat the disease with medication or surgery and prevent further loss of vision. Preceptor Joe Moose Receives Award from Campbell

Joe Moose, a pharmacist at Moose Pharmacy in Concord, North Carolina, received the 2009 M. Keith Fearing Jr. Community Pharmacy Practice Award from Campbell University. Moose is a fourth-generation pharmacist whose great-grandfather started the company. He serves as a preceptor to students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. The M. Keith Fearing Community Pharmacy Practice Award is given in memory of Keith Fearing, a 1941 Campbell alumnus who was instrumental in the establishment of the Campbell University School of Pharmacy. Undergraduate Student in Mumper’s Lab Selected for Workshop

Eric Butter, a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was selected by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to attend a workshop for academically talented, undergraduate and graduate students performing research in allergy, immunology, and infectious diseases. Only 23 students were selected out of 203 applicants for the Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities program. Preceptor Heidrick Receives Immunization Award

Joe Heidrick, PharmD, a preceptor for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has received an honorable mention in the Individual Practitioner category of the American Pharmacists Association’s 2009 Immunization Champion Awards. Heidrick, who holds an adjunct assistant professor appointment in the School, is a 2005 graduate of the School’s Community Pharmacy Residency Program and works as the clinical coordinator for Kerr Drugs in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
