Kenan Distinguished Professor Kim L.R. Brouwer, Pharm.D., Ph.D., delivered the 2017 John C. Krantz, Jr. Lecture at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on April 6. Second Carolina Nanoformulation Workshop Shares Discoveries in Nanomedicine

From March 13 to 17, scientists from industry and academia came together at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy to learn about and to get hands-on experience with the latest advances in nanomedicine at the second annual Carolina Nanoformulation Workshop. Many ADHD Kids Have Questions for Their Doctor but Don’t Ask

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder want to ask their physicians about their condition and medications but often don’t, according to researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “We have found that there has been very little research into how providers, parents and youth communicate about ADHD and ADHD medications,” said Betsy Sleath, Ph.D., the lead author of the study and the George H. Cen Guo Receives 2016 Brewington Award as Most Outstanding Graduate Student

Cen Guo, a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been awarded the School’s Kathryne A. Brewington Graduate Student Research Award, which is given annually to the most outstanding doctoral student in the pharmaceutical sciences. Under the guidance of Kim Brouwer, Pharm.D., Ph.D., Guo’s dissertation research focuses on hepatic transporters and pharmacokinetic modeling. China Scholarship Council Inks First-of-Its-Kind Agreement with UNC Pharmacy

The China Scholarship Council has signed a memorandum of understanding with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy to provide financial assistance for Chinese students studying pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In a ceremony at the Carolina Inn on Monday, March 27, representatives of the China Scholarship Council agreed to provide support to Chinese students who are accepted into the Doctor of Pharmacy and the Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences program at the pharmacy school. Persky Receives 2017 AACP Distinguished Teaching Scholar Award

Adam Persky, Ph.D., has been named a recipient of a 2017 Distinguished Teaching Scholar Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. He will be honored along with one other recipient during the Opening General Session of this year’s AACP Annual Meeting, held July 15–19 in Nashville, Tennessee. Persky is a clinical associate professor in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Postdoc Elizabeth Wayne Selected as TED Fellow

Elizabeth Wayne, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in cancer nanotechnology at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been selected as a TED fellow and will take the stage to deliver a talk at TED2017 this April in Vancouver. Fiscelli Receives 2016 Smith Staff Award for Excellence

Kathryn Fiscelli, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2016 Phyllis Smith Staff Award for Excellence at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Fiscelli is the assistant director of research administration here at the School. She works to manage nearly 150 grants and contracts and the 20 to 30 grant applications active at any one time that are handled by the School’s Office of Research Administration. Kohn Named Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors

Harold “Hal” Kohn, Ph.D., professor emeritus of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy has been named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. The NAI Fellows Selection Committee chooses candidates who have demonstrated “a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society.” One of Kohn’s most significant achievements is the development of a treatment for certain epilepsy patients that received Food and Drug Administration approval in 2008. UNC Catalyst Initiative Aims to Create and Share Tools to Fight Rare Diseases

Freely giving researchers the tools and knowledge to tackle rare and orphaned diseases is the mission of UNC Catalyst, a new endeavor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill launched with a $2 million grant from the Eshelman Institute for Innovation.
