E(I) Lab Names 2018 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Contest Winners

The winning project was led by a group of five UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy students and one MBA student from Kenan-Flagler Business School. Their project aimed to reduce the cost of wasted inhalers by sterilizing them with UV-C light, allowing a single inhaler to be used safely by multiple patients. The E(I) Lab is an entrepreneurship project launched by the UNC Eshelman Institute of Innovation. CIPS Wins Awards for Web Design and Video Production

Members from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Center for Innovation in Pharmacy Simulation won four Hermes awards and two Telly Awards for web design and videography. An interactive webpage designed by CIPS won four Hermes Creative Awards on May 18. The page, designed for the Community Pharmacy Foundation, outlines principles of team-based health care. Moldova State University Delegation Spends Week at Pharmacy School

Six faculty members from the Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chișinău, Moldova, visited the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy from Monday, April 16, to Saturday, April 21, to explore pharmacy practice, research and education in the U.S. and future opportunities for collaboration. AMCP Chapter Wins Second Straight National P&T Competition

For the second consecutive year, students in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy won first place in the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy Foundation’s National Student Pharmacist Pharmacy and Therapeutics Competition. Members of the UNC chapter of AMCP took home the top prize in a field of 46 pharmacy schools, topping seven other teams in the finals in Boston on April 26. Pharmacy Administration Master’s Residents Receive ASHP Grants

Pharmacy residents from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy received two of three national grants awarded by the ASHP Foundation. Stephanie Jean, Pharm.D., and Charlotte Wells, Pharm.D., two UNC Medical Center pharmacy administration residents in the School’s master’s degree program, both won the ASHP Foundation Master’s Resident Practice-Based Research Grant for separate research projects. The ASHP grant is awarded to support pharmacy researchers in programs that combine the completion of a residency and a master’s degree. Class of 1937 Pharmacy Alumnus Remembered in New World War II Book

A UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy alumnus is memorialized in a new book about World War II. “Iwo Jima’s Battlefield Promise” tells the story of the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of two officers and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill alumni who happened to meet by chance during the chaotic fighting. The book focuses on the encounter between Capt. Edward Stephenson, a 1937 graduate of the School, and Maj. James Scales, both U.S. Marine Corps officers from small towns in North Carolina. PY4 students returned to campus for Post Clerkship Day on May 4 to celebrate the completion of their rotations and prepare for commencement. PY4 President Stephanie Salch presented the School with the Class of 2018 gift, The GROW Fund, which will promote Guidance, Resilience, Open-Mindedness and Wellness among student pharmacists as part of the School’s initiative to foster student, faculty and staff wellness. Kohn Receives School’s 2018 Distinguished Service Award

Professor Emeritus Harold “Hal” Kohn, Ph.D., is the 2018 recipient of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Distinguished Service Award. The award is presented annually for accomplishments and contributions that enhance both the School and the profession of pharmacy, and for exceptional support of the School’s service and outreach initiatives. SGC@UNC Researchers Adopt ‘Extreme’ Open Science, Share Data as It Happens

Researchers in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy are taking part in an experiment in experimentation by making their research publicly available as it happens. Postdoctoral research associates Alfredo Picado, Ph.D., and Carla Alamillo Ferrer, Ph.D., are participants in the Structural Genomics Consortium’s Extreme Open Science Initiative, which encourages SGC scientists in labs around the world to publish their notes online. The UNC-Chapel Hill hub of the SGC, run by Tim Willson, Ph.D., conducts open research into new protein kinase inhibitors with the aim of expanding drug discovery and creation.
