Steeb, Urick Receive AACP New Investigator Awards

Two professors from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy received New Investigator Awards from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. David Steeb, Pharm.D., M.P.H., and Ben Urick, Pharm.D., Ph.D., won 2019 New Investigator Awards from the AACP. Steeb is a clinical assistant professor and Urick is a research assistant professor, both in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education. The New Investigator Award provides start-up funding for the independent research programs of early-career pharmacy faculty. UNC Catalyst Hosts Rare Diseases Day Awareness Event

The UNC Catalyst for Rare Diseases hosted a meet-and-greet in the Genetic Medicine Building on Feb. 27 for Rare Diseases Day. Catalyst scientists provided guests an overview of the research group’s mission and rare disease projects. UNC Catalyst is a research group focused on understanding and counteracting rare diseases. Martin, Hanafin Win Presidential Trainee Awards from ASCPT

Two students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy were awarded the Presidential Trainee Award from the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Jesse Martin and Patrick Hanafin were among the 17 recipients of the award, which recognizes the top scoring abstracts submitted by clinical pharmacologists in training. Martin also received the ASCPT Jason Morrow Trainee Award for the second-highest scoring trainee abstract submitted. The award includes a $1,000 prize. UNC Chapel Hill Ranked 10th in the World for Pharmacy and Pharmacology

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was ranked 10th in the world for pharmacy and pharmacology in the recently released 2019 QS World University Rankings. UNC was ranked 21st in the same category in 2018. Among American universities, Carolina’s pharmacy and pharmacology programs rank fourth overall. Jackie Gerhart Wins BAHM Case Competition

Jackie Gerhart, a Ph.D. student at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, took first place at the Business School Alliance for Health Management Case Competition at Harvard Business School on Feb. 9. Gerhart and her partner, Aditi Borde, a dual MHA/MBA candidate, won a $10,000 first place prize for their pitch idea for a partnership with Walmart and Blue Cross Blue Shield NC to develop an incentivized diabetes management program for rural communities. Paavo Honkakoski Receives Keohane Professorship

Paavo Honkakoski, Ph.D., a global expert on nuclear receptors, will return to the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy as a recipient of the Nannerl O. Keohane Distinguished Visiting Professorship in 2019-20. Honkakoski is a professor of Biopharmacy at the School of Pharmacy and Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland. The Keohane Professorship is designed to promote collaboration and the enhancement of intellectual life between UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University, with an emphasis on contributions to the teaching missions of both universities. Mariya Popova Awarded NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship

Mariya Popova, a second-year Ph.D. student in the Laboratory for Molecular Modeling, is the recipient of the 2019-20 NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship. Popova is supervised by Alexander Tropsha, Ph.D., and Olexandr Isayev, Ph.D. Her research focuses on applications and development of deep learning methods for computational chemistry and drug design. Alumni in China Find UNC Community through Carolina China Club

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy has a global alumni network — and UNC’s alumni presence is particularly strong in China. The Carolina China Club, UNC’s alumni association in China, has over 500 members across UNC’s various schools, about one-fifth of whom are health sciences alumni. The club hosts events ranging from lectures to UNC basketball watch parties. Members of the club’s health sciences group met with Stephen Eckel, Pharm.D., M.H.A., and Ashley Qi, M.B.A., during their visit to Beijing last November. Christine Ko to Represent UNC Pharmacy at CLARION Case Competition

Third-year Pharm.D. student Christine Ko will represent the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in the CLARION interprofessional health care case competition. Ko is a member of UNC’s four-person interdisciplinary team, which also includes Natalie Browne, of the Gillings School of Global Public Health; Uzma Khan, of the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling program at the School of Medicine; and Monica Kim, of the School of Dentistry.
