Each spring, third-year doctor of pharmacy students at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy receive their white coats, the traditional symbol of health professionals. The White Coat Ceremony marks the students’ transition into the final year of the PharmD program and is designed to commemorate the transition from the classroom to the Pharmacy profession. This event is meant to reflect the responsibility, professionalism, and commitment expected of the pharmacy professionals. “Flipped Classroom” Results in More Satisfied Students and Higher Exam Scores

A study by Russ Mumper, PhD, shows a significant improvement in learning outcomes after “flipping” his Basic Pharmaceutics II classroom. The results are the subject of “The Post-Lecture Classroom: How Will Students Fare?” published by The Atlantic magazine online September 13. The flipped classroom is a teaching method designed to stimulate higher-level thinking and meaningful interactions in the classroom. Flipped classrooms move the traditional lecture outside of class and free up class time for faculty-student engagement and active learning. Pharmacy and Public Health Launch PharmD/MPH Dual Degree

Beginning in 2014, students at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy will have the option to earn both a doctor of pharmacy and a master of public health in a new five-year dual-degree program created in partnership with the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Students in the doctor of pharmacy program can earn a PharmD and an MPH in five years instead of the six it would typically take to complete the two degrees separately. Phi Delta Chi Receives Fraternity’s Highest Honor

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s chapter of Phi Delta Chi won the Emory W. Thurston Grand President’s Award at the Phi Delta Chi Grand Council held August 6–10 in Omaha, Nebraska. The Thurston award is the highest honor that any of PDC’s ninety-three active chapters can receive from the national organization. “I’m so proud of our students,” says clinical associate professor Marcary Marciniak, PharmD, who serves as the group’s faculty adviser. “This award shows that the chapter is already realizing its potential in only three years since it was reactivated in 2010.” The chapter also placed first in the … Read more


Kappa Epsilon Wins Awards at National Convention

The School’s Lambda Chapter of Kappa Epsilon received the 2011–2013 National Project Award for breast cancer, the 2011–2013 Community Service Award, and the 2012–2013 Alumni Outreach Award at the pharmacy fraternity’s national biennial convention held July 17–20 in Richmond, Virginia. Ruth-Ann Lee, PharmD, and Heidi Anksorus, PharmD, are KE’s current faculty advisers. Jo Ellen Rodgers, PharmD, also served as adviser during the period covered by the award. “I am very proud of each of these ladies and the great successes they have achieved by working together towards common goals,” Anksorus says.

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy welcomed the Class of 2017 on August 9. The new class comprises 61 percent women and ranges from eighteen to forty-five years old. The 163 students hail from five countries, twenty-four U.S. states, and thirty-four North Carolina counties. Six Students Appointed to 2013–2014 ASHP Leadership Positions

Several students in the School’s doctor of pharmacy program have been appointed to national positions within the American Society of Health-System Pharmacy student forum for 2013–2014. Justin Arnall is a member of the Advancement of Pharmacy Practice Advisory Group. Juinting “J. T.” Chiang joins the Student Society Development Advisory Group. CAPS Takes Home Multiple Awards from APhA

The Carolina Association of Pharmacy Students at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy won multiple awards and honors at APhA2013, the annual meeting of the American Pharmacists Association held this year in Los Angeles March 1­ to 4. The CAPS patient-care project Generation Rx was selected for the third-place National Generation Rx Award. Generation Rx is a patient-care project that aims to educate students and community members about the dangers of prescription drug misuse and abuse.
