Caiola Named Chair of New Division

Steve Caiola, MS, has been named chair of the new Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education at the UNC School of Pharmacy. Caiola, an associate professor, has served as interim chair of PPEE since it was established on July 1. He first came to UNC in 1969 as an instructor at the School and assistant director of pharmacy services at N.C. Memorial Hospital. UNC Students, Professor, SNPhA Chapter Honored at Convention

Members of the UNC School of Pharmacy received numerous honors at the annual meetings of the National Pharmaceutical Association and the Student National Pharmaceutical Association in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 20-24. National Scholarships for Academic Excellence Five of the twenty $1,000 national scholarships for academic excellence went to students in the School’s doctor of pharmacy program. PharmD Student Lisa Adams Receives RESPy Award

Lisa Adams, a fourth-year professional student at the UNC School of Pharmacy, received a Respect, Excellence, and Service in Pharmacy award from Pharmacy Times magazine. Adams, who will be featured in an upcoming issue of Pharmacy Times, has been an active volunteer in the community, including service at UNC Children’s Hospital, Alterra Woods Retirement Community, the Piedmont Community Health Clinic, and various other clinics and health fairs. She also has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and the Green County Special Olympics. In addition, she has worked in community pharmacies for almost nine years. Kappa Epsilon Honors UNC Faculty, Chapter

Kappa Epsilon honored two UNC School of Pharmacy faculty members and the UNC Lambda chapter at the fraternity’s 46th annual national convention on July 25-29 in Charlotte. Jennifer Stegall-Zanation, PharmD, a clinical assistant professor in the Office of Professional Education, was recognized for her contributions as convention chair. Jo Ellen Rodgers, PharmD, a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, received the Unicorn Award, which recognizes Kappa Epsilon alumni members’ sustained service to the organization. School’s New Division Focuses on Practice, Education

The UNC School of Pharmacy has created a fifth academic division to focus on the needs of pharmacy practitioners at the point of care. The Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education will house the School’s Professional Experience Program, the Pharmaceutical Care Laboratory, the Postgraduate/Continuing Education Program, and the Master of Science in Health System Pharmacy Program, which will begin in the fall of 2008. White Harris Is School’s New Director of Recruitment, Diversity

Carla White Harris has been named the new director of recruitment and diversity initiatives at the UNC School of Pharmacy. She is also the new Chapel Hill–based director of the UNC/ECSU PharmD Partnership Program. It will be her responsibility to develop and execute a student-recruitment plan for the doctor of pharmacy program with the long-term goal of enhancing the quality and the diversity of students applying to the School of Pharmacy. Doctoral Student Earns AFPE Fellowship

Laura Bonifacio, a second-year doctoral student at the UNC School of Pharmacy, has received a $6,000 award from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education. Bonifacio, who is in Assistant Professor Mike Jarstfer’s lab in the Division of Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products, earned an AFPE Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in the Pharmaceutical Sciences. The one-year award, which is given to a maximum of 70 doctoral students annually, is renewable after the first year. Two PharmD Students, Mentors Earn Travel Scholarships

Two students in the UNC School of Pharmacy and their faculty mentors have received travel scholarships to participate in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Annual Meeting and Seminars. Irene La (mentored by Kim Leadon, MEd) and Travis Heath (mentored by Wendy Cox, BCPS) earned the scholarships through the 2007 Walmart Annual Conference Scholarship Program. Fifty-one student-mentor pairs received the honor. The partnership program between the UNC School of Pharmacy and Elizabeth City State University has received an honorable mention in the 2007 North Carolina Distance Learning Association Program Award. The NCDLA is a nonprofit organization that promotes development and application of distance learning in education and training. Award recipients will be recognized at the North Carolina Distance Learning Alliance Conference on May 25 at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. Wilmington pharmacist John Davie Waggett and Gastonia pharmacist Wyn Wheeler Sterling have been named the 2007 Preceptors of the Year by the School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The School also named Mollie Ashe Scott the Area Health Education Center Instructor of the Year, which recognizes an outstanding faculty member who has had a positive impact on students’ advanced practice experience.
