Josh Guffey Named Director of Office of Continuing Education

Josh Guffey, Pharm.D., has been named director of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Office of Continuing Education. Guffey is currently the director of pharmacy education at the Charlotte Area Health Education Center/Carolinas Medical Center, where he has extensive experience in pharmacy education and continuing education. He also holds a faculty appointment in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education. Steeb, Urick Receive AACP New Investigator Awards

Two professors from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy received New Investigator Awards from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. David Steeb, Pharm.D., M.P.H., and Ben Urick, Pharm.D., Ph.D., won 2019 New Investigator Awards from the AACP. Steeb is a clinical assistant professor and Urick is a research assistant professor, both in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education. Sjoquist Wins ACCP Education and Training Poster Competition

Laura Sjoquist, Pharm.D., a postdoctoral fellow at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, won first place in the 2018 American College of Clinical Pharmacy Education and Training PRN poster competition. Sjoquist is the experiential programs academic fellow in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education at the School. She received the award after presenting at the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Global Conference in Seattle in October. Ferreri Awarded $3M CDC Grant for Study on Opioid Use

The Centers for Disease Control awarded a $3 million grant to Stefanie Ferreri, Pharm.D., for a study on screening older adults who use prescription opioids and are at risk for falls. Ferreri is the executive vice chair of the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and a clinical professor. Her study will engage patients within the UNC Health Care System who are 65 years of age or older and taking either an opioid or benzodiazepine, with the objective of implementing a de-prescribing medication protocol to protect older adults at risk of falls. … Read more


McLaughlin Receives AHEC Innovation Grant for Rural Education Research

The North Carolina Area Health Education Centers awarded an Innovation Grant to Jacqui McLaughlin, Ph.D., for a project investigating challenges associated with student rotations in rural clinical sites. “The primary goal of the project is to define the educational challenges encountered at clinical sites in rural regions and generate potential solutions to address these problems in an effort to increase the number of students rotating to those areas,” said McLaughlin, an assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and the director of the School’s Center for Innovation in Pharmacy Education and Research. Fake, Low-Quality Medicines Burden Developing World, UNC Study Finds

More than 13 percent of essential medicines in low- and middle-income countries are substandard or fake, according to recent findings from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Sachiko Ozawa, Ph.D., M.H.S., an associate professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, led a meta-analysis of 96 studies that examined the problem of substandard or falsified medicines in low- and middle-income countries. White Promoted to Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion

Carla White has been promoted to associate dean of organizational diversity and inclusion at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. White is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education and has served as assistant dean for innovative leadership and diversity since 2015. White established the School’s primary diversity initiative in 2007 as the head of the Office of Leadership and Diversity. McLaughlin Named Director of CIPhER

Jacqui McLaughlin, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been named director of the School’s Center for Innovative Pharmacy Education and Research. McLaughlin was appointed to the position after Thomas Angelo, Ed.D., the founding director of CIPhER, retired. Before her promotion, McLaughlin was the director of education research at CIPhER. Phil Rodgers Selected as Director of Interprofessional Education and Practice

Phil Rodgers, Pharm.D., a clinical associate professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been selected to serve as the director for interprofessional education and practice. Rodgers coordinates several courses in the School, including the Patient Care Experience 2 course (PHCY 718) and the Integrative Pharmacotherapy 2 course (PHCY 732), and teaches in several others.
