Researchers Discover Compound with Potential to Stop Cancer Metastasis

A UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy scientist is a leader in a large research collaboration that has discovered a new compound that suppressed the spread of cancer — a process known as metastasis — in three different animal models of human cancer. When cancer metastasizes, it spreads from its starting point to a different part of the body. The new compound created by the research team and named metarrestin significantly inhibited metastasis in human breast cancer, human prostate cancer and human pancreatic cancer that had been grafted into mice. Carpenter Wins AHEC Innovation Grant for Pediatric Opioid Prescription Research

The North Carolina Area Health Education Centers awarded an Innovation Grant to Delesha Carpenter, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., to create an online module that prepares medical residents to communicate with pediatric patients and their parents about opioids. The grant of more than $45,000 will allow Carpenter, an assistant professor in the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, to develop an online module to teach medical residents to effectively engage pediatric patients and their parents in shared decision-making about treatment with opioid medications. Olivia Dong Honored with P.E.O. Scholar Award

Olivia Dong, a doctoral candidate in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, is the recipient of a $15,000 Scholar Award from the International Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for the 2018-19 academic year. Dong is one of the 100 recipients out of 741 nominees selected to receive a P.E.O Scholar Award, which provides merit-based funding for women in the United States and Canada who are pursuing a doctoral-level degree at an accredited college or university. Pharmacy Administration Master’s Residents Receive ASHP Grants

Pharmacy residents from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy received two of three national grants awarded by the ASHP Foundation. Stephanie Jean, Pharm.D., and Charlotte Wells, Pharm.D., two UNC Medical Center pharmacy administration residents in the School’s master’s degree program, both won the ASHP Foundation Master’s Resident Practice-Based Research Grant for separate research projects. The ASHP grant is awarded to support pharmacy researchers in programs that combine the completion of a residency and a master’s degree. Alexander “Sasha” Kabanov, Ph.D., Dr. Sci., is a recipient of a 2018 Life Sciences Award from the Triangle Business Journal. Kabanov was nominated in the category of Outstanding Individual Research from Universities or Research Institutes. The award was presented at a ceremony held May 10 at the Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary. Kabanov is the Mescal S. UNC Video Helps Kids with Asthma Ask Doctors More Questions about Care

Adolescents with asthma are more likely to ask questions during doctor visits after viewing a video on the importance of being involved during asthma visits and receiving a list of questions and checking off the ones they want to ask the doctor, according to a new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. SGC@UNC Researchers Adopt ‘Extreme’ Open Science, Share Data as It Happens

Researchers in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy are taking part in an experiment in experimentation by making their research publicly available as it happens. Postdoctoral research associates Alfredo Picado, Ph.D., and Carla Alamillo Ferrer, Ph.D., are participants in the Structural Genomics Consortium’s Extreme Open Science Initiative, which encourages SGC scientists in labs around the world to publish their notes online. The UNC-Chapel Hill hub of the SGC, run by Tim Willson, Ph.D., conducts open research into new protein kinase inhibitors with the aim of expanding drug discovery and creation. Third Carolina Nanoformulation Workshop Shares Discoveries in Nanomedicine

From March 12 to 16, scientists from industry and academia came together at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy to learn about the latest advances in nanomedicine and to get hands-on experience with advanced nanoformulations at the third annual Carolina Nanoformulation Workshop. The workshop is a unique blend of classroom and hands-on training that stresses interaction and participation.
