Albert Bowers Promoted to Associate Professor

Albert Bowers, Ph.D., a faculty member in the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry, has been promoted to the rank of associate professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Bowers is a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and an affiliate member of the School’s Center for Integrative Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery. Bowers’ research focuses on harnessing natural product biosynthesis to make next generation therapeutics. Eckel Receives Duke’s Skolaut Leadership Award

Stephen F. Eckel, Pharm.D., M.H.A., received the Milton W. Skolaut Leadership Award from the Duke University Department of Pharmacy on June 29. The award is given annually to a past resident of the Duke University Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program in recognition of outstanding leadership and contributions to the profession of pharmacy. The Duke residency program has graduated 240 residents as of 2018. Eckel is the interim chair of the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education and the associate dean for global engagement at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Seven 2018 Residents Begin PGY1 Independent Pharmacy Ownership Residency

The PGY1 Independent Pharmacy Ownership Residency at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy welcomed its third class of residents for 2018–19. The program trains Doctor of Pharmacy graduates to be owners of independent community pharmacies. The residents receive a practical business education to complement their pharmacy education. Seven pharmacy residents will participate in the program, up from four a year ago. Microbiome Experts Gather for PharmSci 2018 Conference

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy hosted the 12th annual Chapel Hill Pharmaceutical Sciences Conference on June 4, focused on the interface between drug delivery and the microbiome. Over 100 attendees gathered at the William and Ida Friday Center in Chapel Hill for the conference. Speakers included faculty from the School and from UNC’s chemistry, microbiology and biomedical engineering programs, as well as faculty from other universities, including Duke University, N.C. GPS Program Brings London Student to UNC for Research Experience

Li Xian Ng, a student at the University College London School of Pharmacy, came to the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy for a three-month research rotation as part of the School’s Global Pharmacy Scholars program. The exchange program allows students from UCL to travel to North Carolina to work with professors at the School and sends UNC pharmacy students to London for research there. Ng worked in the lab of Gauri Rao, Pharm.D., M.S., studying pharmacokinetic modeling and antibiotic dose optimization. Kabanov Elected 2018 Controlled Release Society Fellow

Alexander “Sasha” Kabanov, Ph.D., Dr. Sci., has been selected for membership in the College of Fellows of the Controlled Release Society for his “outstanding contributions to the field of delivery science and technology.” Kabanov will be inducted into the college at the 45th Annual Meeting and Exposition of the Controlled Release Society July 22–24 in New York City. Kabanov is the Mescal S. Ferguson Distinguished Professor in the Division of Pharmacoengineering and Molecular Pharmaceutics and the director of the School’s Center for Nanotechnology in Drug Delivery. Shawn Hingtgen Promoted to Associate Professor

Shawn Hingtgen, Ph.D., a faculty member who is pioneering a new treatment for cancer using induced neural stem cells to deliver therapeutic agents, has been promoted to the rank of associate professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Due to their expansive utility, stem cell-based therapies hold the potential to redefine therapeutic approaches and provide cures for many terminal diseases, Hingtgen said. Asheville Professors Present at NRHA Annual Conference

Faculty at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Asheville satellite campus presented at the National Rural Health Association annual conference in New Orleans. Pharmacy residents and professionals from across the Southeast gathered at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy for the fifth annual Research in Education and Practice Symposium on May 21 and 22. REPS 2018 included podium presentations from over 120 residents, fellows and postgraduate trainees, as well as three professional development lectures and numerous networking opportunities.
