Persky Named AJPE Associate Editor

The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy has appointed Adam Persky, PhD, as an associate editor of the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, the official scholarly publication of the association. Persky joins Claire Anderson, PhD, Jack Fincham, PhD, and Frank Romanelli, PharmD, MPH, who also serve as associate editors of the journal. Founded in 1937, AJPE is the official scholarly publication of AACP. Its purpose is to document and advance pharmaceutical education in the United States and internationally. Zane Receives $70,000 in NICHHD, PhRMA Foundation Grants

Nicole Zane, PharmD, has received two grants totaling $70,000 from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation. Zane is a graduate student in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics. Dhiren Thakker, PhD, is her faculty adviser. The Shriver institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, awarded Zane a one-year, $30,000 grant for her project, “Predicting Pediatric Voriconazole PK Using In Vitro Metabolism & PBPK Modeling.” The institute aims to understand the “complex process of human development from conception to old age.” Zane … Read more


Grad Students Kapadia, Claypool Win WVU Research Forum Awards

Two graduate students won awards for their research at WVU’s pharmacy research forum on June 12–13. MOPH’s Chintan Kapadia placed first in the podium presentations, and CBMC’s Sarah Claypool placed third in the poster presentations. Two UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy graduate students received awards at the inaugural West Virginia University School of Pharmacy Regional Research Forum. About 100 participants from academia and industry attended the two-day conference, which took place on June 12–13. Two Professors Included in Highly Cited Researchers List

Thomson Reuters’s 2014 Highly Cited Researchers list includes two UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy professors. Alexander “Sasha” Kabanov, PhD, and Elena Batrakova, PhD, are among the top one percent cited in their subject field. Kabanov and Batrakova are members of the School’s Center for Nanotechnology in Drug Delivery. Two UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy professors are the most often-cited scientists in the world, according to the Thomson Reuters 2014 Highly Cited Researchers list. Farley Receives $400,000 AHRQ Grant to Study Medication Management in Medicaid

Joel Farley, PhD, has received nearly $400,000 from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to study the continuity of medication management in Medicaid. “Patients with more than one chronic condition are complex to treat and often have poor health outcomes,” says Farley, an associate professor in the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy. “For patients with serious mental health problems, the presence of additional chronic conditions may actually double the risk of dying from a cardiovascular event.  These patients require continuous care to lessen the risk of poor health outcomes.” Farley’s team will examine continuity in the prescribing of medications … Read more


Team Effort Cuts Hospital Readmission by 65 Percent

Hospital readmissions are a serious problem that affect thousands of patients nationwide and cost the U.S. health-care system an estimated $17.4 billion a year. More than 2,000 hospitals across the country are expected to face penalties this year for high readmission rates. Against this backdrop, a study in one UNC Hospitals clinic led by Assistant Professor Jamie Cavanaugh, PharmD, found that a new follow-up program for patients that have recently been discharged from the hospital reduced readmission rates within thirty days by 65 percent. New NIH Grant to Help Kashuba Target HIV Reservoirs

Angela Kashuba, PharmD, the John A. and Deborah S. McNeil, Jr. Distinguished Professor in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been awarded $4.4 million over five years by the National Institutes of Health to study drug penetration in the tissues where the HIV virus lingers. The award is one of two grants totaling approximately $7 million made to UNC researchers to help develop treatments that target HIV reservoirs, the single most important obstacle to eradicating HIV from the body. Kashuba to Advise NIH on Women’s Health Research

Angela Kashuba, PharmD, has been named to the National Institutes of Health Advisory Committee on Research on Women’s Health. Kashuba is the first representative of pharmacy or the pharmaceutical sciences to join the group. The members serve four-year terms and provide guidance to the director of the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health. Jena Ivey Burkhart Receives NCPA Geriatrics Award

Jena Ivey Burkhart, PharmD, has been awarded the 2014 Dale Jones Memorial Award for Excellence in Geriatrics from the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists. Burkhart received the award from the NCAP Chronic Care Forum in recognition of her extensive efforts to promote quality patient care in the elderly population.
