NC Legislators Basnight and Owens Visit PharmD Partnership Program at ECSU

North Carolina Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight (District 1) and Representative Bill Owens (District 1) visited Elizabeth City State University on Friday, February 24, to see the UNC/ECSU Doctor of Pharmacy Program in action. The legislators, along with UNC chancellor James Moeser and ECSU chancellor Mickey Burnim, were given a tour of the innovative video-conferencing technology that links the classrooms of the two campuses. Student Group Receives Institute on Aging Award

Doctor of pharmacy students from the UNC School of Pharmacy were awarded first prize for their poster in the category of “Campus-Community Collaboration” at the third annual Aging Exchange held on January 24 at the Friday Center. The students receiving the award were third-year pharmacy students Ted Hancock, Glenda Shell, Jessica Nonnemache, Allison Tuell, and second year student Steve Gilmore. A cash prize was awarded to the students, who were presenting the poster on behalf of the Geriatric Interest Group at the UNC School of Pharmacy. UNC’s Lambda Chapter of Kappa Epsilon Receives Two National Awards

Kappa Epsilon, a professional pharmacy fraternity, presented the School of Pharmacy’s Lambda Chapter with the 2004-2005 New Member Recruitment Award at the national convention in August. Jo Ellen Rodgers, PharmD, clinical assistant professor, received the fraternity’s 2004-2005 Outstanding Adviser Award. Kappa Epsilon was established in 1921 to unite female pharmacy students across the nation. Thirty-four collegiate chapters and six alumni chapters are currently active.


SOP Announces New Director of Student Services

Wendy Cox, PharmD, has been named as director of student services for the School of Pharmacy. Cox’s appointment will become effective on September 12th. Cox, who received her PharmD in 1998 from UNC, completed a pharmacy practice residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1999 and a primary care specialty residency affiliated with Campbell University in 2000. She currently serves as director of pharmacotherapy services for the Wake AHEC and as a clinical assistant professor for the School of Pharmacy. Cox is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist and a certified diabetes educator.


UNC-Chapel Hill, ECSU Launch Innovative Joint Pharmacy Program

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy in collaboration with Elizabeth City State University is pleased to announce the Doctor of Pharmacy Partnership Program Beginning in Fall 2005, the UNC-Chapel Hill Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program will enroll 10-15 students per year at a satellite campus through a partnership arrangement with Elizabeth City State University (ECSU). This partnership enables the Doctor of Pharmacy program to increase the number of graduates each year and to promote increased numbers of pharmacists working in underserved populations, especially in northeastern North Carolina.
