Creating an engaging culture is a priority for leaders at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, such that it’s built into the School’s BEYOND strategic plan. Underscoring their commitment to this priority, School leaders attended the 2023 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) in Phoenix, Arizona last month.

ABRCMS is one of the largest meetings in the country to showcase minority talent, with approximately 5,550 individuals attending this year. It aims to promote diversity in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, and brings together students, faculty and researchers from across the country. Staff from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy attended the conference including Amanda Storyward, director of organizational diversity and inclusion, William Taylor, assistant director for the graduate program, and Leah Pompey, McKesson Leading Excellence, Advancing Diversity (LEAD) recruitment and mentoring program manager. They hosted a reception in collaboration with faculty, staff and fellows from the UNC School of Medicine and the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.

“This reception was a great opportunity for students to network and for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy to encourage students to apply and attend our esteemed program to further their professional careers,” said Pompey.

The purpose of attending the conference is to expand the School’s reach to diverse talent for the Ph.D. and Pharm.D. programs and heighten awareness of the range of opportunities at UNC-Chapel Hill.

“ABRCMS is a highpoint of my year. Getting a peak into the future as you talk to so many brilliant undergrads who will go on to shape the world for the better is inspiring. Hopefully, some of them will join us here on our campus next year,” said Taylor.

“It was wonderful to talk to the remarkable students at ABRCMS about their research interests and future plans,” said Storyward. “I am so excited for the possibilities of innovation and creativity they will bring to pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences. If even a fraction of what was on display there comes to the School, we will be a better place for it.”
