Today we celebrate the 13th annual World Pharmacists Day – a day celebrating pharmacists around the world with the theme Pharmacy strengthening health systems.

With this year’s theme in mind, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy would like to recognize faculty and partners for their contributions to building a stronger health system for us all.

  • Tim Willson, Ph.D., from the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry is strengthening health systems by working on the next generation of antivirals to counteract merging threats. This effort supports the efforts of the Rapidly Emerging Antiviral Drug Development Initiative (READDI), which aims to “bring together the world’s best scientific and business minds to proactively develop safe and effective antiviral drugs BEFORE the next pandemic.”
  • Benyam Muluneh, Pharm.D, from the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics is strengthening health systems at home and abroad through his work as the co-director of the UNC-Ethiopia Alliance. Through his work in Ethiopia, he is collaborating with local teams and health systems to implement Ethiopia’s National Pediatric Cancer registry, as well as precepting pharmacy students and UNC Medical Center pharmacy residents onsite. To quote a pharmacy student that traveled with Muluneh to Ethiopia, “As far as impacting my future professional career, it is my belief that [this experience] has given me yet another lens in which to understand my patients, my profession and, overall, my place and role in this world.”
  • Shawn Hingtgen, Ph.D., from the Division of Pharmacoengineering and Molecular Pharmaceutics is helping pharmacy strengthen health care systems through his research utilizing stem cells to “chase cancer” and develop living tissue platforms to guide decisions on care using a patient’s own tissue. His goal is to utilize a transdisciplinary approach to ultimately bring more effective treatments directly to patients for multiple types of cancer.
  • Delesha Carpenter, Ph.D., from the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy is strengthening health systems by training pharmacy personnel to be master communicators through hard conversations like suicide, substance use harm reduction and vaccine hesitancy. She also directs a research network of rural community pharmacies across the Southeastern United States, focused on answering questions relevant to pharmacy practice and medication use.
  • UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy PharmAlliance partners University College London School of Pharmacy (UCL) and Monash University Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences are also celebrating World Pharmacists Day. Researchers from their institutions are highly dedicated to this year’s theme.

On World Pharmacists Day, the School would again like to recognize all pharmacists committed to strengthening health systems locally and around the world.
