Juliane Nguyen, Ph.D., has been promoted to full professor in the Division of Pharmacoengineering and Molecular Pharmaceutics (DPMP) at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy where she also serves as vice chair and director of graduate admissions.

“I’m grateful for this promotion, and I truly believe it’s a testament to the incredible efforts of the outstanding students, postdocs and collaborators I’ve had the privilege of working with at Carolina and the University at Buffalo. I’m excited to continue our work to create safer and more effective treatment options for patients, ultimately enhancing their quality of life,” said Nguyen.

Nguyen is committed to educating and training the next generation of pharmaceutical and biomaterials science leaders. She received her Ph.D. from the Philipps-University of Marburg in Germany and she completed her postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco. Prior to joining the University of North Carolina in 2019, she was an assistant professor at the University at Buffalo.

She leads an interdisciplinary lab to develop innovative and personalized biotherapeutics for cancer, myocardial infarction, colitis and other diseases by merging molecular engineering with pharmaceutical sciences and bioinformatics.

“Her research in the delivery of complex biologics always brings a high level of innovation and creativity. She has developed transformation collaborations with the cardiovascular center and numerous other researchers on campus and has really driven cutting edge drug delivery technologies to advance therapies for treatments,” said Kristy Ainslie, Ph.D., chair of DPMP and Fred Eshelman Distinguished Professor.

Over the course of her career, Nguyen received several prestigious awards, including the New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research (NYSTAR) faculty award, the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award in 2018, the Biomedical Engineering Society’s Young Innovator Award in 2019, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Emerging Leader Award in 2019 and the Galenus Guest Professorship in 2023. Nguyen has served on more than 30 National Institutes of Health (NIH) and NSF study sections. She is a standing member of the NIH Drug and Biologic Therapeutic Delivery study section. Additionally, Dr. Nguyen is the executive editor of Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, an internationally recognized journal in the field of drug delivery.

This year, Nguyen also received the College of Fellows Award from the Controlled Release Society. This distinction recognizes exceptional individuals in the field of controlled release who have made outstanding sustained contributions to science and technology.

“The Controlled Release Society holds a significant reputation worldwide as a leading society for delivery science and technology. What makes it even more special to me is that it was the first international scientific conference I had the privilege of attending during my Ph.D. journey, and it left a lasting impact on me. Being elected to the Controlled Release Society – College of Fellows, alongside exceptional scientists and colleagues, is truly an honor that fills me with deep gratitude,” said Nguyen.
