Assistant Professor Jacqueline “Jacqui” McLaughlin, Ph.D., is the recipient of a 2017 Emerging Teaching Scholar Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
According to AACP, the Emerging Teaching Scholars Award recognizes the excellence of academic pharmacy faculty engaged in or supporting scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning. In recognizing service and outstanding contributions to the academy, pharmacy education and schools, the AACP Council of Faculties Emerging Teaching Scholars raise the bar for scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
During her tenure at the School, McLaughlin helped develop four new courses for the Pharm.D. and graduate curricula: Pharmacy Innovation and Problem Solving, Patient Care Experience, Pharmacy Bridging Course and Evaluation Research and Program Design. Since 2013, she has served as a committee member or adviser for four postdoctoral fellows, four graduate students in the School’s master’s program, two Ph.D. students enrolled in the UNC School of Education and one graduate student enrolled in the UNC School of Dentistry. She has published 32 peer-reviewed articles on the scholarship of education, working with 23 different faculty members across all five of the School’s divisions.
There is not a more deserving recipient of the AACP Emerging Teaching Scholars Award than Jacqui McLaughlin,” said Denise Rhoney, Pharm.D., chair of the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education and the Ron and Nancy MacFarlane Distinguished Professor.
“In the short time that she has been with the School, she has had tremendous impact on our ability to effectively use educational research for informing practice and policy within our program,” Rhoney said. “She has worked with faculty across all the divisions of the school and disseminated her work at an extremely high pace. She has certainly raised the bar at the School for the scholarship of teaching and learning.”
McLaughlin received her undergraduate degree in biological engineering from North Carolina State University, her master of science in biomedical engineering from the University of Memphis, and her doctorate in educational research and policy analysis from North Carolina State University.
McLaughlin came to UNC as a postdoctoral fellow with the Office of Strategic Planning and Assessment at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and is now the director of the office. She is involved in educational research that examines relationships between student characteristics, engagement and performance over the course of a curriculum. Her research experience and interests extend across the context of admissions, classroom engagement, experiential learning and the cocurriculum.
The 2017 Emerging Teaching Scholar Awards will be presented at the AACP Annual Meeting, Pharmacy Education 2017 in Nashville, Tennessee, during the Council of Faculties Business Meeting on Monday, July 17 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.
