Betsy Sleath, PhD

Betsy Sleath, PhD, has been named the director of the Program for Child Health Services at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Sleath, the George H. Cocolas Distinguished Professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, takes over for Eliana Perrin, MD, MPH, who was named the University’s new associate vice chancellor for research in November.

The Program on Child Health Services works to address barriers to health-care services for children, as well as racial and regional disparities in child health status. It focuses on ways to ensure the development, implementation, and evaluation of high-quality, evidence-based services for children and women in their childbearing years. The program collects and reports data on health indicators; conducts research to evaluate health status and programs; and provides technical assistance to policymakers, advocates, and health care providers.

Sleath is the chair of the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy at the School. She has worked on children’s health issues for many years, examining efficacy and adherence issues of medication use in that vulnerable population. She is also an expert on care issues in minority ethnic groups.
