Bill Zamboni, PharmD, PhD

William Zamboni, PharmD, PhD, has been granted tenure by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Board of Trustees. Zamboni is an associate professor in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

As a member of the School’s Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, Zamboni is the director of the UNC GLP Bioanalytical Facility and the director of the Translational Oncology and Nanoparticle Drug Development Initiative Lab, known as TOND2I. He is also the codirector of the North Carolina Biomedical Innovation Network for GLP toxicology and pharmacology studies of small molecule and nanoparticle agents. GLP is good laboratory practice, a system of quality-management controls for research labs that ensures the consistency, reliability, quality, and integrity of pharmaceuticals preclinical safety tests

Zamboni’s research concentrates on optimizing the chemotherapeutic treatment of cancer by applying pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and pharmacogenetic principles. Information obtained from preclinical and clinical translational studies can greatly add to the understanding of the pharmacology of anticancer agents; permit individualization of chemotherapeutic treatment based on pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and pharmacogenetic principles; and allow for the rational design of therapeutic regimens. Zamboni also works to develop nanoscale anticancer agents and focuses this research on the relationship between the disposition of these nanoparticles and the mononuclear phagocyte system, part of the immune system comprising certain white blood cells.

“Dr. Zamboni has established an international reputation as a thought leader in the development of anticancer agents, especially in the area of nanoparticles and nanomedicine,” says Bob Blouin, dean of the School. “His research and contributions to this cutting-edge area of science have been highly cited. We are so pleased with Bill’s accomplishments, and we are fortunate to have him as a colleague.”

Prior to joining the School in 2008, Zamboni served for ten years as an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and School of Medicine. He received his BS, PharmD, and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and completed an oncology residency at the NIH Warren G. Magnuson Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and a research fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Zamboni holds three patents, has given nearly fifty invited presentations, is the author or coauthor of eighty-five peer-reviewed papers, and has written more than thirty book chapters and invited papers. Zamboni serves as a reviewer for five journals and as an editorial board member of Drugs of the Future. He is also a licensed pharmacist.
