The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy announces that Denise Rhoney, PharmD, an associate professor of pharmacy practice and an award-winning instructor at the Wayne State University Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Michigan, will be the new chair of the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education.

“I am extremely pleased to welcome Denise Rhoney back home to North Carolina,” says Robert Blouin, dean of the School and the Vaugh and Nancy Bryson Distinguished Professor. “Her accomplishments so far in her career and her dedication to the profession of pharmacy and to its students bode well for her future success at UNC.”

Rhoney’s appointment as an associate professor will become effective January 1, and she will fully assume her duties as chair by March 1.

She has been a member of the Wayne State faculty since 1995, first as an adjunct professor while serving as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy and then as an assistant professor of pharmacy practice in 1997. She was promoted to associate professor in 2003. She is also an associate professor in the Department of Neurosurgery of the Wayne State School of Medicine.

Rhoney is the author or coauthor of more than sixty papers and fifteen book chapters and the recipient of a number of teaching and precepting awards from Wayne State. She is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. She is also a licensed pharmacist in Michigan and Kentucky.

She received her BS in pharmacy and doctor of pharmacy from the University of Kentucky and completed a general clinical pharmacy residency critical care specialty residency at UK. She was a clinical research/drug development fellow and clinical instructor here at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy from 1993 to 1995 with Professor Herb Patterson, PharmD, serving as her preceptor.

Clinical associate professor Stefanie Ferreri, PharmD, has served as interim chair of the division since June when former chair Steve Caiola, MS, began phased retirement after a forty-year career with the School.
