Roy Hawke, PharmD, PhD, has been named as assistant dean and director of graduate education for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a clinical assistant professor
As director, Hawke will assume responsibility for managing, advancing, and assessing the School’s graduate program in pharmaceutical sciences. He will work with the faculty to continue to improve the quality of teaching and support for the program, and he will chair the graduate education committee. Hawke has served as director of graduate studies for the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics and as a member of the graduate education committee for the past several years.
“Roy Hawke has been heavily involved in all issues concerning the professional development and well-being of our graduate students and is exceptionally well prepared to lead the graduate program in pharmaceutical sciences,” says Alex Tropsha, PhD, associate dean for research. “The program faces many challenges given the current economic climate and toughening competition for the best and brightest students. Roy’s passion and vision for our graduate program make him the best candidate for this position.”
Hawke joined the School as a research associate in 1998 and was promoted to clinical assistant professor in DPET in 2000. Prior to that, he spent twelve years as a senior research scientist with Burroughs Wellcome’s Division of Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism. He earned his PhD from the University of Florida, completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Wellcome Research Laboratories, and received his PharmD from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
