Townsend is a dynamic member of several student organizations, including the Carolina Association of Pharmacy Students, Taking Action by Service, and the Student National Pharmaceutical Association. She has been actively involved with the School’s LEAD program as a student recruitment ambassador, arranging and speaking at various pharmacy recruitment events at high schools and colleges where she encourages students explore the pharmacy profession. She also tutors two high school students on a weekly basis and is very active in her church, where she directs the choir and produces a monthly health newsletter for the congregation.

“No one expects these things from Davon,” her nomination letter says, “But she has a great sense of appreciation for the life she has and goes forth to share that with others. She works so hard to take care of the members of her church family and her friends with her pharmacy know-how, as well as with her emotional support.”

After graduation, Davon will complete an administrative fellowship in recruitment and diversity at the School.

The Samuel Burrus Award is presented to members of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy family who exhibit outstanding and unselfish civic, community, or church volunteer service provided outside the scope of regular pharmacy practice. One award is presented to a student currently enrolled in the School. The second is awarded to an alumnus of the School or to a husband and wife team, at least one of whom is an alumnus. Each recipient receives a $750 award, and a $750 donation is made to the charity of their choice. This award is funded by the Pharmacy Foundation of North Carolina and is given by the Burrus family in memory of Samuel B. Burrus, who graduated in 1915 from the Southern College of Pharmacy in Atlanta.

Townsend donated her award money to Abundant Hope Christian Church in Durham.

The 2011 alumni recipients of the Burrus Family Award for Community Service were Jill and Eric Wolford, who graduated from the School in 1987 and 1995 respectively. The Wolfords work to support cancer patients in need through their organization, the Caring Community Foundation.
