Russell Mumper, PhD, vice dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been named as the 2013 recipient of the 2013 University of Kentucky Outstanding Graduate Program Alumnus for the Pharmaceutical Sciences award.
The award recognizes graduates of the UK graduate program for their accomplishments and contributions to scholarship, education, and research in the pharmaceutical sciences. Mumper will receive the award at the University of Kentucky on January 31, 2014.
This marks the second time a School faculty member has received the honor. Kim Brouwer, PharmD, PhD, the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor and chair of the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, was the inaugural recipient in 2006.
Mumper earned his PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from UK in 1991. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship in 1992, he held various product development positions in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry before returning to academia in 1999. Since then, he has received more than $28.6 million in research grants and contracts, including $10.2 million as principal investigator. He has more than 295 scientific publications and abstracts, as well as forty-five patents or patents pending. He has also cofounded five companies.
In 1999, Mumper became a faculty member in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the UK College of Pharmacy. He served as vice chair of the department from 2004 to 2007. From 1999 to 2006, Mumper was also the associate director of UK’s Center for Pharmaceutical Science & Technology, a unique pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. Mumper led the CPST’s efforts to complete full product development that resulted in the successful submission of seven Investigational New Drug applications and the commencement of human clinical trials with industrial and university partners.
Mumper came to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007 as the John A. McNeill Distinguished Professor in the School’s Division of Molecular Pharmaceutics. He was the first director of the School’s Center for Nanotechnology in Drug Delivery, serving until 2012. He became the School’s vice dean in 2010.
In 2006, Mumper received the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Lipid-Based Drug Delivery Award. In 2007, he was recognized by the UK Alumni Association as one of six “Great Teachers” at UK, the oldest, continuously given award for teaching at UK. In 2009, he was elected Fellow of the AAPS, and in 2013, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award for Post-Baccalaureate Instruction, a campus-wide award at UNC-Chapel Hill.
