The Preceptor Master-Class: Motivating the Unmotivated

Co-sponsored by CIPhER and the Office of Experiential Programs

5:00 pm – 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 4, 2020, Via Zoom

Do you encounter learners who are disengaged, not interested, or distracted? Are you curious about how learner motivation research can be used to improve their engagement? In this Preceptor Master-Class, participants will be led through an interactive discussion with precepting and educational experts. Participants will share their experiences and challenges with motivating learners to receive explicit feedback on how they can improve their practices with evidence-based techniques. Attendees should submit questions to structure our discussion by November 2—the goal is for participants to bring specific questions and challenges to receive feedback about areas for improvement from their peers and educational experts.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss challenges with motivating and engaging learners in practice
  2. Compare motivation theories that describe observed learner behaviors
  3. Apply strategies from motivation theories to stimulate learner engagement

Target Audience:  This program is designed for all preceptors, faculty, staff and trainees working in an experiential setting.

Presenter Information:

Charlene Williams, PharmD, BCACP, CDE, Director of Preceptor Development & Clinical Assistant Professor, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

Charlene Williams completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed an ASHP-accredited specialty residency in primary care at Mission Hospital and the Mountain Area Health Education Center. Currently, she is Director of Preceptor Development and a clinical assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Dr. Williams is a Certified Diabetes Educator and is board certified in ambulatory care pharmacy by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. She has prior experience starting hospital-based and primary-care pharmacotherapy clinics, serving as a residency director and preceptor, and working in an ADA-accredited diabetes education center.

Michael D. Wolcott, PharmD, PhD, BCIDPS, Director of Educational Resources and Scholarships, UNC Adams School of Dentistry and CIPhER Faculty Fellow, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

Michael D. Wolcott, PharmD, PhD, BCIDPS is the Director of Educational Resources and Scholarship at the University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry. In this role, he supports faculty to optimize teaching and learning, enhance their teaching experience, and inspire educational scholarship. He completed his PhD in education at the UNC School of Education specializing in the learning sciences and psychological studies. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy followed by a pharmacy practice residency at Duke University Hospital, where he worked as a clinical infectious diseases pharmacist. Michael is also a clinical assistant professor and faculty fellow in the Center for Innovative Pharmacy Education and Research (CIPhER) at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy where he supports educational research initiatives within the School. Michael’s research focuses on creative problem-solving, curriculum change management, preceptor development, and assessment.
