Early Career Foundation Awards in the Sciences

February 10, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

When: February 10, 2020, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Where: Toy Lounge, on the fourth floor of Dey Hall

The UNC Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations invites early career faculty, mentors, nominators, and other members of the campus community to an information session on prestigious early career awards offered by national foundations. These extramural awards are aimed at building the research programs of tenure-track faculty across the natural and physical sciences and engineering; each award has individual areas of emphasis and eligibility requirements. Foundation-sponsored science awards invest in the careers of UNC’s talented faculty and advance discovery in emerging areas of research.

The session will be presented by Diane Royle, Director of Strategy, Proposal and Award Services at UNC Corporate & Foundation Relations, in collaboration with Nathan Blouin, Director of the UNC Office of Research Development. It will provide an overview of how foundation awards differ from their federal counterparts, summary information on the award programs listed below, and detail on support from the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations and the Office of Research Development. Recent UNC recipients will share their experience and perspective with the audience, and there will be question and answer time to interact with the speakers.

The Sciences overview will focus on the following awards:

Beckman Young Investigators, sponsored by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation

Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists, sponsored by the Blavatnik Family Foundation

Cottrell Scholars, sponsored by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement

Moore Inventor Fellows, sponsored by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering, sponsored by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation

Sloan Research Fellowships, sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

A separate session on foundation awards in the biomedical sciences will be scheduled this spring. Both events may be of interest to faculty whose research programs extend across the natural and physical sciences and the biomedical sciences.
